Yeah, 80s' new wave movement is a big change of popular music. It was caught fire by punk that denyed and destroyed existing a little hard rock like Progressive and Fusion. Once after the ready-made idea was broken, musicians began to create freely new varied style of music that was called New Wave.
Some of them used synthesizers and create Electronic Pop, some mixed Funk and Latin and create Fankalatina, some deeply make experiments on new expression like German Noise Industrial, etc.
There is an important historycal fact that New Wave was born
concurrently with Ska, Reggae and Rap. Is this a coincidence? I think it's not. New Wave is affected by those Jamaican music. And after the New Wave was riped, then Hip Hop was born affectd by New Wave, espesialy Electronic Pop.
Same kind of coinsident hapeppend when Alternative and House are born. Alternative and House are not only affected by Punk, New Wave and Hip Hop, but also affecting each other still now.
