JJ, I highly recommend Cancun Valet, you'll get a better deal and a hassle free experience with them. Trying to get transportation once you are at the airport can be a headache, they can pressure you pretty hard and you may end up paying more for a ride in a car without air conditioning. Vic (the owner of Cancun Valet) has an excellent reputation and a great fleet of vehicles. Before I got my car I used his service whenever we had guests coming in. Have a great trip!

Hi Kate,
The bloggers here in Mexico all share the same opinion...the media is blowing things out of control and using "scare tactics" when discussing Mexico. The areas that are indicated in the official warning are the border states, not the tourist areas but the TV stations are making blanket statements about the country. The warning for students on spring break was again for the border towns and warning them to stay away from drug dealers, not for the resort areas.
Things in Cancun are calm and lovely. ZERO tourists have been hurt in the war on drugs, zero. Crime happens here like every major city, robberies, etc, and while the police do have a history of corruption, they are REALLY cracking down on it and trying to protect the tourists. If a police officer attempts to ask for a bribe, politely tell him you would rather have the ticket for the offense and take his name and badge number. You can report them and they will lose their job.
Check out some other bloggers in Mexico and you will see we all feel the same. We are going about our regular day to day lives, not living in fear, not living in a war zone and things are even better in the hotel/resort areas.

Hello,
Can you tell me about the crime situation in Cancun? The news in the U.S. is pretty bad and people are warned to not go to Cancun/Mexico because of the violent crimes occuring there, especially between government and drug cartels. Also, the police corruption and how they take money from tourists. Can you please give me some insight?

Hi Stace,
If you are not in the bullring, you would never know they are happening. The bullring is downtown and not really close to anything at all and it's well enclosed. I'm not a fan myself, but I have never had to witness anything that would turn me off. I've been to other events at the bullring (not a fight) and still have not seen anything nasty, I'm sure your friends will be fine. The Virgin of Guadalupe festival shouldn't really impact your stay at all, here it's a real "family" time so folks stick close to home. The most you might see is a small parade of decorated cars, but that's about it.
Bullfighting is not that big here at all, the ones that do happen are pretty much just for tourists (so from what I hear they are slightly less gory than "real" fights). That said, they are not for the feint of heart. In fact, I have heard that bullfights are now only happening in "high season" when there are more tourists here, locals just don't go for it.

I and some friends will be in Cancun Dec 10, 11, 12 (2008). 2 in our party abhor bullfights. I know they will take place on Wed the 10th (3:30 PM)---if one stays in the Hotel Zone are you far enough away to not even know they are taking place? Since we'll be there during the Virgin of Guadalupe fiesta, does Cancun add bullfights that we should be aware of?
