R.A.A.S.T.A. MANIFESTO
May 4, 2009 by homelesschampions
THE R.A.A.S.T.A. MANIFESTO Recovering Addicts against Supporting Terminal Addiction We Believe That The Many Resources Available In The Dtes Today Do Nothing More Than Support Addiction! If That Were Not True, Then Why Do You Have More Financial Support For Addiction Than Recovery? Why Is There No Support For Detox Services, When The Estimated Number Of Addicts In The Dtes Is Some Ten Thousand, And There Are Only 200 Hundred Detox Beds Available? The Carnegie Center Has The Largest Open Drug Market In North America And Is Supported By Many Different Foundations. There Are Over 200 Hundred Carnegie Centers Throughout The World And Not One Of Them Has The Reputation That Ours Has. It Has Been Estimated That Over 2000 Drug Transactions Take Place On The Very Doorstep Of This Building Daily. Who Cares? We Do! We Are A Group Of Recovered Addicts That Want To Put Pressure On The City, The Police, And The Government To Put A Stop To This Building And Its Flagrant Abuse Of The Carnegie Foundation And Legacy. United We Can This Building Is Probably The Worst Example Of Abuse Of Any I’ve Seen. Everyday Men And Women Will Scour The Bins, Garbage Cans, Etc Of East Vancouver; Only To End Up Back On The Hasting Street Locale, To Exchange Bottles For Cash, Walk Out The Back Door And Be Met By A Drug Dealer, To Spend What Takes Hours And Hours Of Digging Through Garbage To Earn. The Physical Condition Of These Men And Woman Is Bankrupt! They Are Only Steps Away From Death, Their Health Is Poor, They Are Being Motivated By Addiction Not The Ecosystem, And I Have Seen The Lineups, They Can Be Quite Festive As Friends Gather Together To Tell Stories Of A Nights Work. Most Of These Poor Lost Souls Earn 20 T0 40 Dollars For Their Evenings Labor, But It Is Instant Fast Cash. They Are Infected And Disease Ridden! What A Sad State! To Us This Is Unacceptable! The United We Can Foundation And All Its Supporters Should Be Ashamed. Supporting Terminal Addiction Is Not A Good Cause Insite Is Next On The List. The Money That Is Spent To Keep These Doors Open Is Justified I’ll Agree On The Point Of Saving Lives, But In The End How Many Times Would They Allow An Overdose In Their Facility To Happen For A Repeat Offender? The Fire And Ambulance Service Is Stressed To The Max! In General This Building Keeps Them Very Busy. The One Real Question I Have For The City, The Police, The Carnegie, The Government, The Insite Supporters, The United We Can Store: Is Why Are You Supporting Not Only Addiction, But Why Are You Supporting Drug Dealers? The Ones That Make There Trade In Front Of These Services Are Ruthless, They Have Been Given A Green Light By Each And Every One Of You And Your Sponsors! They Seem To Be Doing Quite Well. They Have Generated 10.000 Customers Right Under Your Noses And No One Seems To Care! Supporting Terminal Addiction Is Alive And Well In Vancouver And I.M Sick Of It. The Methadone Program Is As We Speak Creating A Whole New Generation Of Opiate Dependency The Government Junkies Slash Methadone Zombies Are Just Starting To Amass The Support Of This Form Of Terminal Addiction Is The Worst Of Its Kind The Overall Program Is Corrupt The Kickbacks ,The Pharmacies Themselves Can Do What They Want! They Are Out Of Control! If You Think That These Services Are Helpful Then Just Ask Any Twenty Year Veteran Of The Dtes How He Or She Feels About Themselves Today, And The Answer Will Be Universal. They Wish They Had A Better Chance At Life, But Now They Are Addicted Till Death! Thus Terminal Addiction This Is What You Served Them, A Huge Plate Of Enablement And You Better Hope Your Children Or Grandchildren Don’t Get A Taste Because The System Or The Machine Is Well Oiled And Organized And Alive And It’s Eating Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters Etc. As Fast As It Can . We At RAASTA Are Just Beginning To Organize. You Will Hear From Us Again I Promise You! The Resources We Have Available Are The Same As Yours But We Are Coming From A Different Perspective. Not Terminal Addiction: But A Life Free From Addiction Of Any Kind! If What We Do On Behalf Of These Our Brothers And Sisters In The Dtes Will Save Just One From Terminal Addiction Our Cause Is Just And We Can Sleep One More Night, But We Are Not Going To Stand By And Allow This Slaughter To Happen Under Our Noses Any Longer! The Killing Fields Or Death Sentence As We Know It, The Existence And Support Of Terminal Addiction Has To Be Stopped! We Feel The Place To Start Is With Detox On Demand! Not Waiting A Week! If We Accomplish This One Goal We Will Feel We Have Made A Small Dent Into The Worst Addiction Problem In North America

40 recovering addicts formerly from the Downtown Eastside are organized by 2010 Homeless Champions and the Servants of Hope Society and feed more than 400 homeless and drug addicted people an incredible Christmas Dinner. 2010 Homeless Champions regularly provides this type of outreach to individuals and are making a difference and in some cases through our example we are motivating some addicts to embrace the same principles that we have used to change our lives.

This website is dedicated to telling the stories of the unfortunate individuals living in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver in the hope that awareness of this problem will spur people to get involved, to let all levels of government know that something has to be done to alleviate this misery rooted in addiction, homelessness and depravity. To point the way to recovery from addiction, which we believe is the root of most of this situation. With the 2010 Olympics coming to Vancouver it is our mandate to record the transition and the extreme changes that are even now occurring and will continue to unfold in the Downtown Eastside.

I work for a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Thailand. Our main therapeutic model is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). We believe that intensive treatment in a comfortable environment with caring professional counselors and a long term of aftercare offers your best chance of success.

It has become my passion in life to extend the hand to those in need of support and services from addiction. Thus the Sober Sources Network (www.sobersources.com) and the many live support forums like the Sober Village (www.thesobervillage.com)for alcoholics and addicts in recovery or looking for a recovery solution. We also have Sober Teens Online, teen forums for teen issues. I think it important that we make available all the resources to those n need of help with addiction issues as like me, it just may be the one thing that gets you clean and/or sober.

I've put together a site that looks at "why some of us stay clean" or stay quit. I've studied it a lot. Finally decided to write a it all down. Also there is a lot of info on why people in general are getting crazier. The information isn't just for people who have an identifiable addiction, but anyone who finds themselves confused, frustrated, angry etc...www.dgswilson.com

I am not promoting my own website but if you'll forgive me, I am promoting my book. I Am Your Disease (The Many Faces of Addiction) is a compelling, brutally honest account of life with an addicted person and subsequently their death.

The book is helping people to understand that addiction is a brain disease. Yes, taking that first hit of cocaine or what have you is indeed a choice. But addiction is not a choice! It is a life-threatening side effect of that choice We hope our book will help people who are going through this. I lost my own son to addiction and am hoping to spare others my heartbreak. Thank you.

For the people suffering from drug addiction, research shows that medications must be an important part of recovery, especially when combined with behavioral therapies. In this way, addiction is similar to other chronic relapsing diseases like hypertension, diabetes and certain forms of cancer, also treated and managed with medication, in tandem with behavioral and lifestyle changes.

By first addressing the physiological components of the disease, substance-dependence patients may have a better opportunity to address the behavioral and environmental components, enhancing their progress through the various stages of recovery.
Canterbury Institute Protocols for substance dependence treatment integrate physiological, nutritional and psychosocial therapies designed to help patients meet their individual recovery goals.

I agree, the more resources the better. I found this when searching for addiction information. I am an (ex) problem drinker and got more help at an online site, www.mywayout.org, and learned more from the associated blog than I ever would have found here in my home town. More power to you and keep up the good work!!

I found this interesting site that is not primarily about addiction, but it contains some interesting perspectives about people who have had addictions and how they have dealt with them. They are completely anonymous, but they also seems incredibly truthful.

It is called earfl and it something like an audio blog that records peoples thoughts and puts them up on the web for others to listen to.

Here is a particularly fascinating entry...

Not sure if it will help but still interesting.
