An American In Scotland

http://anamericaninscotland.blogspot.com

I moved to Scotland from California last year. I'm writing about my experiences living in the U.K. and comparing them with the way things are done in America.

I've been threatening to come up with a list of some of the things I like most about my adopted country, so here goes: The BBC By virtue of T.V. licensing, which means it doesn't have to cater to advertisers' prime demographic of brain-add...

I came across an interesting thing a couple of days ago - actually, I'm furious about it, but I'm pretending to be nonchalant in the hopes that I'll eventually QUIT being furious...The U.S. is the only country in the world that requires its citizens...

Living in a city with lots going on all the time, I tend to forget how small the U.K. really is. One thing that highlights this fact is that, relative to the U.S., the artistic talent pool is small as well, so you see the same faces and hear the same...

I've begun making a mental list of little conveniences that I took for granted in the U.S. and that, for one reason or another, never caught on here. This should by no means be interpreted as a latent desire to move back, however, since there are jus...

reading you article on the BBC's TV Liscence I dedduct that you seem "OK" paying the fee?? If you look at it another way Im sure Ill change your mind.
TV liscences were introduced because of there being no advertising and little income - nowadays the bbc EARN MILLIONS in revenue sales from selling programmes such as the OFFICE, Documentary productions, Comedy etc etc and that doesnt include the other Millions from DVD sales.
Also, why oh why, do us little Scottish country Bumpkins have to pay the same fee as folks in, say, London. We dont get digital or Cable tv/radio as there is no transmitters available and most are unable to erect Satelitte dishes due to local authority regulations (we dont even receive channel 5).
Have some thought over these points and you may infact start to hate paying.
Good blog by the way!!!!!!!!
