This blog documents the life of Jewelry Artist and activist, Pippit Carlington whose dog, Carmella is the first ever in the US outside of a lab setting to be fully cured of Canine Distemper in both body and central nervous system.
A cutting-edge treatment first developed by Alson W. Sears DVM back in the '70s in a UCLA laboratory involves injecting Newcastle Disease Virus Vaccine (made from birds), or what is referred to as Serum X (a dog-based substance) made when NDV is injected into a healthy donor dog and then special cytokines are harvested at a specific interval.
Next, one of either of the two substances is injected by IV into the Distemper-infected dog, and if the dog has been ill more than 6 days, the same is then injected into the spinal canal to kill the virus in the central nervous system.
Without this intervention the likelihood of survival for longer than a few years (at best) is slim, and dogs suffer paralysis, seizures, blindness, and other agonizing neurological symptoms.
Euthanasia is no longer necessary, as experience is bearing out that many dogs are curable even in the late stage of the disease (often referred to as Old Dog Encephalitis or ODE).
Even so, the prognosis is much better the earlier a dog is correctly diagnosed and treated.
