I really think you have got the reality of Art in any visual form. I tell my nephew who recently turned 13, to whom I gave my back up old Nikon D-70s:: Don't let your teachers or dad (my brother) get all of the technical stuff crammed down your throat. The MAIN Thing is to have FUN with this. Then along with the fun will come the curiosity to make more and more interesting effects so that you find your self in Manual mode to get all of the cool effects you have in your design in your mind.
Some times I think that the boring facts can get Youngsters out of interest because they lead them into Manual mode too soon. I shoot only in manual:it is the only way I can get effects that I know will fit the shot. But the Auto on my new D700 is cleaner than a ....... well let's just say M is the dirtiest on the dial. Wanna see some shots? Go to btunrnerartist.com and in the end of Feb you will be blown away by the Orchid shots I got from the stock photos I got at Safeway when they lowered their price after Valentine's time day was over.
