Migration here I come...
The weather's been so awful here I've decided tomigrate. We blackbirds don't usually do this becauseour navigational skills aren't very good. You'll oftensee blackbirds wandering aimlessly about trying to findthe bird-table or their nest or their way...

Dear David,
As the head of a household that has five cats I really enjoyed your Blackbird Blog. I would have rated you a 10 but I have to live with these felines. Actually only one of my cats goes after birds.
I've noticed that cats tend to specialize in what they hunt: one cat goes after voles, one cat chases milk carton twist offs, one cat loves chasing spiders, another specializes in flies, another in waterbugs, and tries to show off his prowess by bringing his catches onto my bed. Needless to say I jump out of bed really quickly!
I used to have a huge Maine Coone, (he lived to age 20) who killed squirrels. He was especially popular with the gardeners in my neighborhood.
My favorite cat, Angel, only caught socks that were lost in the basement, which was a very helpful talent.
Cats love to leave their dead prey in conspicuous places to let their owners know what they have been up to. Of course, I have to bury the bodies because everyone else just freaks out when they come home and finds a dead vole on the front step. I have little graves all over my garden.
Baby rabbits also do not survive long in my yard. My two outdoor cats, Iris and Frankie, catch the poor little things, and actually give them to my dogs to eat. It is a horrifying site to see your cute little pooch gobbling down a baby bunny in a couple of gulps. We are the only people in out neighborhood who don't have any rabbits in our garden by the end of spring. Everyone else complains about the rabbits eating their vegies. So I guess some good does come from sharing one's home with carnivores.
By the way, I do have one bird, a cockatiel named Ryker. He enjoys the antics of the cats and dogs behind the safety of his steel cage.
It's been fun writing to you.
