I am trying my best not to criticize this attempt the current administration is doing to help our economy rebound. But truthfully, all the details, numbers, and fantastic statistics on "lowering our fuel consumption" is bogus. How many of you really believe these so called "gas gusslers" are not going to be turned around and sold as used or pre-owned vehicles. Ask any car salesman (new or used) where they make their best commissions, is it new cars or used cars. Guess what it's used so what do you think is going to be their focus? Second, I have read stats and info and I am really currios. How many of these new were American made cars? Seems like all we had was a Federally sponsored blow out sale, a short lived "look what we did" success story that will really produce no long term solutions. Not really even a good try just we have a problem so lets throw money at it.

Today I observed imported cars taking majority of the share in the cars sold under CFC Program. Wow! Govt. gave such a huge money to dealers who imported these cars just for getting a major chunk of money under this program. 2 months back on the Portland Port there was a huge line up of Kia Motors and i was wondering that time why so many cars now. But it is clear that whosoever was importing them was having a very good idea about the US Govt's move. I do not know how does that help US Economy and hope at least the Govt. do.!

While the cash for clunkers program is getting a lot of older cars off the road and brought new (temporary) life to the auto industry, I have to wonder if the people that were driving these cars that were only worth a few hundred dollars can really afford a new car. And what kind of interest rates are they having to pay on the loans that the dealers are writing ? Is this the making of the next housing fiasco? How soon before the repossessions start?
What I have found is a person looking for a new car (like myself) and does not own a "clunker" is that the dealerships are not willing to deal on their 09 leftovers this year. They have this new confidence that someone is going to come in and pay MSRP on the vehicles just because the govt.is going to write them a 4500 dollar check.I will remember those dealers when this program ends and car sales once again depend on us that can afford them.

We signed up for this program at the Mini-cooper dealership, and have been waiting for an approval number from whoever is running this program for over a week now. The dealership hasnt gotten info on why none of their deals are getting approval, and I am so mad I culd just spit. I dont know if the dealership is doing something wrong, or the government cant handle it or what...but if my deal doesnt go through, and now all the money is gone...someones gonna get a mouthful from me.

I am a sales rep at a small dealership in souther New Jersey. So far the "Cash for Clunkers" program has been a flop for us. We have disappointed more people than we can help. It is not the new car that is the problem, we have many high mileage new vehicles. It is the old car. For example, the older woman with her 1982 Chevy Suburban that she and her husband bought brand new in 1982. Sorry.... too old. Or the woman who had a 1993 Mercury Cougar XR-7 with over 100,000 miles and running poorly. According to our government, that car gets 19 miles per gallon. Sorry....not a clunker. Or the people with a 1994 Chrysler Concodre with 168,000 miles.........sorry, web site says that car gets 21 mpg........not a clunker. Think of the pollution these cars are emitting every day. Don't you think they should be off the road?

I'm already tired of the ads and the news stories.

But I do have a question:
DOES THE CASH FOR CLUNKERS APPLY TO POLITICIANS?

If so, you guys owe America a LOTTA MONEY!

Cash for clunkers is not very practical. Most young people have small cars that got average fuel economy (22 or 23 MPG). They want to get a new, more fuel efficient vehicle (around 30-31 MPG). This is an increase of 8 or 9 MPG, but since their original vehicle doesn't get 18MPG or less they don't qualify. What a rip. They need to revise the minimum MPG upwards to reflect reality. That would stimulate car sales and the economy. Very few people have vehicles that get less than 18MPG. Especially low income and young people who own small cars. What are they thinking??

This is a good article with actual facts. There is still so much confusion for car buyers. I have found a consumer oriented website that is very helpful. I recommend visiting their FAQ page, it cleared up a lot of questions I had. http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/

I just got back from the local Ford and Nissan dealers and the Ford people explained that they were waiting for info about the program from their headquarters and wouldn't be ready until the 24th of July. The Nissan dealer didn't know anything about the program. They actually asked me if I was buying a new or used car with the clunker money. LOL I was told to research online about the facts and I found a site www.slickbudget.com about a guy who is documenting the whole experience of buying a car using the clunkers program. It is very informative.

The Cars For Clunkers legislation is actually very focused and is only available for a limited one-year, time frame. It offers participants the opportunity to trade in certain older cars for certain other new ones. Unfortunately, many cars do not qualify for the program and therefore are still ideal for the 'traditional' car donor option. Such non-qualifying cars let people give their cars to non-profit organizations who help people with many different kinds of needs, like supporting youth organizations or our older folks or to help promote the arts and health research.

Help yourself with the Cash for Clunkers program if you qualify or if you don't qualify or would like to help others, give your "clunker" to charity and take a tax write-off!

Here are 400 not-for-profit organizations that can always benefit from your 'clunker' or unneeded vehicle. To donate your car, just click on the link to the charity on the web pages below.

This could be very true. The Cash for Clunkers bill will make old clunkers more attractive. Of the clunkers that are given to charity how many cars were just sitting around that people wanted to get rid of and who do not need to purchase a new car. That is the real number that would be hard to estimate.

60% the cars that are currently donated to charity will now be eligible for a $3500 or $4500 voucher under the cash for clunkers program. Since the tax deduction for donating a car is only $500 or what the car sells charities won't be able to compete with the program and charitable car donation will end. A better idea is to just change the amount a person can deduct for donating their car back to the book value. That way every car is eligible, the government doesn't have to spend $4 million of our dollars giving away vouchers and trying to administer a program that is way too convoluted!
