Why I changed to MTM
Firstly after acquiring a Huawei wireless modem the SIM card was not charged IE connected to the system to activate it. As one gets only one free call out service there is a possibility that it is hoped that this call out will be used for this simple and really small task. As my dissatisfaction increased this action looked more and more likely.
This started me monitoring complaints on the net and taking the different sizes between the two major providers MTN came out tops. As has been said on many occasions if money spent on advertising was spent on customer satisfaction they would get a greater value for money. Contempt the root of the problem I think
After I had downloaded the software to connect to MTN I wanted to claim my free call out. I had a error message so used this opportunity to use it. Well firstly this young technician did not know what the problem was so phoned his supervisor. Why cant we go strait to a technical person instead of having to deal with the clowns on the help desk. Microsoft has supervisors on their help desk that at random phone client to find out if their problems have been corrected and this certainly keeps the help desk personnel on their toes. The antics that these people get up to is a subject for another time. The advice from vodacom was to reinstall the system. This supervisor as well did not have much knowledge of computers as to correct the problem the exact error message was searched on the net and software found to correct the problem saving me days of my time.
Another problem is that one has to run out of a data bundle before one can recharge. As one Mb cost increases when one has expended the data bundle the cost per Mb rises sufficiently. Their plan is to obtain increased funds when this happened as the warning of low or no data bundles is poor. To overcome this undesirable situation I only left a low account value after purchase a bundle and as one could not use Internet banking to replenish the bundle was out so other methods were used to credit my account.
The final straw was after obtaining a new vodacom cell phone the help number disappeared off of the phone list. Then the USB modem stopped working and the startup screen did not appear. I had checked the day before whether I had sufficient fund so this was not the problem and further the startup screen does appear even if there is no funds available.
When the net in a major power country has a denial of service it becomes head line news but I have never seen a report here in SA
vodacom practices leave a lot to be desired and as I no longer having any faith in them and aways think the worst when I hit a problem . Did they destroy my phone book entry if so what else are they capable on doing. What technology is doing in the wrong hands is to undermine customers rights. Not all of us are dummies
To change to MTN one must download VMCLite_E220_3_2_1_156_standard.zip (as of Oct 2009 the latest) from the MTN web site and purchase both a SIM card and a data bundle. A Passbook and in some cases a MTN agent will require proof of resistance (the ones that are poor at recording a address given verbally). Insert the new SIM card and delete all previous Vodafone software, and then connect the phone. Delete all the modem drivers ( were under phones $ modems in the control panel and clicking the modem tab one will find the driver ) load the software note the disconnect warning and as well as the screen messages the LED on the modem will flash at a higher rate than normal as the software is loaded. After clicking finished disconnect the modem and once more delete the modem driver in the phones $ modems directory. Connecting the modem should allow one to connect to the net.
Why delete old Vodaphone software and the driver. The new software wont recognize the modem
One disadvantage is that the MTN help line (173) is only available by adding 082 before the number. To take advantage of MTN free service on 173 I have bought a starter pack for my old cell phone.
P.S. It is now law to register a SIM card which would have saved me days when a first acquired a INTERNET radio dongle .
3 weeks on MTN and I haven't regretted my decision to change
