Welcome to Civil War Memory. I blog about subjects related to how Americans have chosen to remember and commemorate their Civil War. Topics cover a range of issues from Civil War historiography to issues in public history and the teaching of history on the high school level. My current research focuses on the battle of the Crater, William Mahone and historical memory. I am also editing a large collection of letters by Captain John C. Winsmith of the 1st South Carolina Infantry.
Recent PostsI‘ve never been a fan of tearing down our Civil War monuments because I tend to think that such a move only works to make us feel better. Although the removal of monuments reflects the very same political, economic, and social conditions that...
I attended a couple of meetings early on of the Virginia Civil War Sesquicentennial committee. During one meeting “Bud” Robertson explained why the committee would not fund reenactments. He expressed concern that they might prove emba...
One of the points that Richard Dreyfuss hammered home the other day was the idea that “America is a miracle.” He never got around to explaining what he meant, but I suspect that most people in the room agreed. For most Americans I ass...

Jack W.Well done blog.
Mark StonemanBest darn Civil War blog out there. A mark of his effectiveness is the critical statement at the bottom here. This blog is about Civil War memory. It analyzes our memories critically, and therefore it sometimes also shakes at our identity. Some readers won't like that. But if you're curious about history, have an open mind, and aren't afraid of intelligent commentary, then check out this blog.
KevinYou say he is "one of the most insidious anti-southern bloggers" but I actually believe him to be THE MOST INSIDIOUS. We must ban together and stop this monster of a person.

JimWould like to point out how biased Kevin Levin's Civilwarmemory blog is. He's one of the most biased and insidious anti-southern bloggers around. Check out his snide attitude towards anything celebrating southern history.
