4 stars Ruth Plumer

I can honestly say that Mr. Pauletta, the first principal I worked for when I started working in this school district, possessed all five of the leadership qualities outlined in the article. As the principal of Fort Lauderdale High School’s Adult Education program at the time, he really cared about people; and worked at offering evening classes adults could take to better themselves. Mr. P, (as I endearingly refer to him now) was jolly and cheerful most of the time. With his bold personality and temperament, one always knew where one stood with him. Whether it was discussing politics or the latest decision the school board took on a particular issue, he always voiced his opinion with whoever was willing to listen. Every year while he went over my evaluation, he shared anecdotes from his life’s experience, and he always ended our meeting with encouraging words to me. “Always invest in yourself”; “plan your work and work your plan”, and “build on what you have” are a few of his favorite expressions that I now find repeating to my sons at times. His legacy to me is a greater appreciation for education and lifelong learning. That is the true mark of an unforgettable leader.
