All I can say is WOW! Stop in and read intelligence, different viewpoints and feel the quiet way this writer communicates. I enjoyed myself. Well done. SKDD
If one question seems to govern my life right now it is, "Why believe something with insufficient evidence?" Every day I tell my students in every subject that they must "Show...not tell!" It is an axiom in fiction writing but also in science. I take it very seriously.
Currently I am most interested in the way that science, philosophy, religion, and to some extent the arts, have shaped our history and today's culture.
To our grave misfortune, the world is being gripped more and more by the terror of theocratic thinking and action. Therefore, I devote my free time to the study and exercise of reason, learning about history and the best ways to defend and promote freedom. As it turns out, the liberal education is the best way to do that. All people need to learn about math, science, their language, their history and the broader international and cosmological history. All of my reading and writing and learning and living lead me to believe that we live in a world with no god or gods in it and that we human beings must make the best of the circumstances we have.
Recent PostsAustin Dacey has written a blogpost, "Putting God out of the Ethics Business," at Psychology Today on the "good without God" posters up in New York City. For the secularists, skeptics, and Unitarians among us, this is a no brainer in most ways. Dacey...
This is when I want to go ballistic. The Worldview Times says:Environmental alarmism is being exploited to chip away at national sovereignty. The latest threat to American liberties may be found in the innocuous sounding Copenhagen Climate Treaty, wh...
Quite a while back I posted some stuff about an Ohio "science" teacher who was teaching creationism and allegedly abusing students with a Tesla coil. In my original post I said he is worse than the most diehard Slayer fan. They just mutilate themselv...
I've just gotten my copy Dawkins' new book, The Greatest Show on Earth and haven't gotten more than two chapters in. But I just thought I'd fan the flames for good reads by posting Lawrence Hursts' review in Nature (also reviews Carl Zimmer's new boo...
I hate the growth economy. Hate it.There. I've said it. I think it disrupts happiness, destroys communities, and demolishes ecosystems. And I hate a lot of the things associated with it including all of the niche advertising and the weird shadow tech...
I hope to do a more extended post on this later. Louisiana Coalition for Science has a new post up that is simply appalling in how far creationists have gotten in their push to undermine good science education there. The creationists of the Louisiana...

PB is doing a real service here. Lately, the hairs on my neck have been rising. Deep stupidity is not only 'out there' (as it always has been), but it has once again donned its political armor. This isn't just a matter of 'discussion' for some. What's ignorant fears what isn't. And, fearing it, wants to eradicate it. If you're reading for blogs like this one, keep in mind that this isn't just an exercise in intellectual clarity. It's political defense, baby, and we've needed it for some time. Keep up this good work!
