Saw them in Pgh, Columbus then Detroit. (twice would have been sufficient)The guitar solo in Firth of Fifth was awesome up on the screen! Not sure why Banks played the Cinema Show solo an octave lower, but it did give it a little harder edge. And don't worry, these guys aren't finished, they still need to find a way to pay for all those L.E.D's!

I am 24 years old and a Genesis fan. I love the old stuff and the newer stuff. I thought the set list was perfect. My all time fav. is Domino so I was very pleased to hear that. I sang word for word Carpet Crawlers and I know what I like. I love those songs, Mama was also a highlight. I thought the crowd sucked however, which is nothing new for Detroit, I get told to sit down during Red Wings playoff games. My buddy went to the Ottawa show and said the crowd there was awesome. Aside from the boring crowd the show was great. This was a dream come true as I thought I would never see them. THANK-YOU Phil, Mike & Tony. Please do not let this be the final tour!!!!

I saw them in San Jose last week. The HP Pavilion as they call it is smaller than some of the other venues around the country, so the stage setup was smaller than ones I have seen on YouTube, but the atmosphere was a bit more intimate. I was 30 rows back on the floor, and I too was dissapointed at the view, until we all stood up and those big people I couldn't see around, ended up being 1 foot shorter than my wife and I. I have seen Genesis as far back as 79, 81 and 83 or 84 in Berkley (waited overnight for the 8th row). Being a band geek in high school, my friends and I really appreciated their older works because they were so accustic and technically complicated, unlike the rock of the early 80s, which is simple and repetitive. Well they fell into the pop culture's lure but I still bought their albums, but it took time for me to enjoy ACABAB, or ABACAM, I know, some of you really like it, thats ok, I like some Bee Gees songs too once in a while. But I am musician at heart, and both my wife and I enjoyed the show for what it was, "A Demonstration of 5 Hugely Talented Musicians. It was amazing to watch how flawlessly the performed each of their songs. These guys are pushing 60 and the energy was the same as 1979. The crowd was suprisingly old too. No one under 40 unless it was someone's kid. Everyone was there to have a great time, and we did too. Enjoy this show, my guess is it will be their last. No new music planned that I know of. If any one hears of new songs please email me. Always ready to listen. Cheers, Scott

It shouldve been called a Phill Collins concert... without the duo (Peter Gabriel) it just didnt feel like Genesis, however Phil Collins performed non-stop and was amazing. The man must be in phenominal shape to play through with no break and the drum roll was incredible. Phil Collins voice is exactley the same as 20+ yrs ago... Excellent!

I'm 45, not the biggest Genesis fan, but I like them. I'm more into hard rock, heavy metal. Music is Music, either good or bad. They have the older good stuff as well as the newer, and likewise, bad stuff too. You guys are way too analytical for me. I'm reviewing as I scored tickets for my wife....at United Center tonight. I'm saving myself for Van Halen on the 16th. Rock On

We're going to the Denver show on Saturday and we're afraid traffic will be a mess since the Rockies made the playoffs and have a game an hour earlier.

Was there a supporting band? Did they start on time?

Replies appreciated

Yes, there are certainly 2 distinct groups of Genesis fans, myself falling into the older group. With a couple of exceptions, the set list seems well balanced, but now that it appears to be the same set every night, probably will not be attending. It takes a bit of the excitement out of it knowing what will be played ahead of time ( I should quit looking I guess ). With the complexity of the stage, lights and sound that were developed for this tour, it makes it quite difficult to make any set list changes, unless it's changed days ahead of time. I've seen them a few times ( Lamb w/ Gabriel, Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering & "Mama" Tours ) and have little doubt that they are playing great and the stage set up is very cool. Hope everyone that goes has a great time, and cut the boys some slack if you don't love the entire set list.

I went to the United Center show last night, and I was totally in shock that nothing from 'Abacab' was played, and for them to touch on every other album, even the horrible 'We Can't Dance' album made me really bitter......
And I haven't even gottten into the muddled slowed down way they do their songs now, which basically leaves them with no good pace or thump at all....thank god they played 'second home by the sea', that was a good rendition, but overall I walked out of the show severely disappointed...and the worst part is I'm going back tonight because I have tickets, and I have a horrible feeling they are going to play the exact same set with the same boring renditions of their weaker material.....I will yell at them from my seat if I don't get any 'Abacab' tonight.....what the hell happened to the spontaneous set lists? The same set the entire tour? Horrible and not very inspired at all.....I'll stick to the cds after this, and that kills me because I know they are capable of much more.....

I also attended the MSG show last nite, the band is indeed stuck; i thought they did an admirable job putting out older more involved songs. I can distinctly recall thinking how many of the people sitting here had no appreciation for The Cage / Afterglow; I was intrigued to hear I Know What I Like and even the 'newer' longer selections,, Home By the Sea and Domino clicked.
Their dilemma centers on probably feeling the need to play a selection of "hits", which they rendered to the glee of many younger folk whom think Supper's Ready is more a statement than the name of fantastic song.
I was pleased indeed, i hadn't heard The Cage in years, that alone was well worth it. But then again I've seen Yes 8 times.

I totally agree with Matt -- Im in the "Carpet Crawlers, In the Cage, I know what I like" camp -- Illegal Alien is part of a long list of songs that would have prompted me to walk. I would have left during I cant Dance (particularly as I watched ridiculous people mimic the video, doing a conga line around the garden, but i knew Carpet Crawlers was next.

Some of the "transition" stuff worked pretty well -- Home by the Sea and Mama were great as were the songs from Duke. Where I am totally in synch with Matt is how much i forgot how most of the 80s stuff sucks. Not a big Abacab fan (beginning of the end for me) so i was pleased to see nothing from that album.
Notwithstanding my personal preference, i think they did about as best as can be expected in trying to balance the two camps. The crowd dynamic was interesting-- judging by the people going berserk during Invisible Touch, Throwing it all away and I cant dance, and the large number leaving during carpet crawlers, i would think most people came for the fluff. But it was a big venue, so maybe it was closer to 50/50.
I dont think there is an easy answer to fix this-- no one will be entirely happy.

Matt, I think you have encapsulated Genesis' dilemma very accurately. The pop oriented tunes lose the older prog crowd as do the longer more complex and introspective classic early songs that mean nothing to those who know the band only from the "hits" heard overplayed on the readio in the 80's.

In attempting to please everyone they've put themselves in a no win situation ... having said that I think they obviously made a conscious choice to combine the two eras and have done a good job both by how they have mixed the songs throughout the show and the generous length of the concerts when compared say to The Police and Stones.

Genesis has put themselves in quite a pickle. Is seems their fans all hate half Genesis' music. I saw the show last night at MSG, and while the sound and lights were fantastic (though nothing compared to Roger Waters), they flopped back and forth between good songs and bad (which is which depends on whether you you like carpet crawlers, in the cage, and after glow, or invisible touch and illegal alien (if they played that song, I would have left, with or without the girl friend)).
Thoughout the show, I drifted back and forth between "this is amazing" to "I wish that fat 50-something year-old lady" in front of me would stop dancing to tonight-tonight.
(I guess some parts of the show reminded me of seeing the Dead when the played Touch of Grey.)
Anyway, if concerts are just about the band making a little money, they have succeeded. If they were hoping to get me to go out and buy a couple of CDs to replace the copy of disc 1 of seconds out that I can't seem to find among others, they completely failed. If they were looking to make the fans happy, they probably half succeeded. I am left feeling "blah" about Genesis. I guess I forgot how much of their music really sucks because I only listen to the good stuff.
Maybe what they should do if they ever tour again is play two nights at small venues and associate them with old stuff and new stuff. This way, all the people who want to dance to follow-you follow-me don't have to get upset when the play in the cage (can you imagine?). Trying to please both crowds is a sure recipe for an unhappy audience.

Hard to please everyone, but playing for over 2 1/2 hours each concert shows me that they tried. I think the mix between old and new is quite nicely balanced, but those unfamiliar with the prog origins of the band would like more radio friendly material and the oldies could have lived quite nicely with the more introspective older gems only.

I just saw them in Columbus. I am in agreement with some of the previous comments. The song selection was terrible. The technical background (images) was great. However, I wanted to hear "abacab" as well "Just a job to do", and even "Misunderstanding". They could have done so much better.

With all respect to Rick's post, I completely disagree. I also have been a great fan for many years --- and I was so relieved that they did NOT play "Illegal Alien" nor much of the bubble gum stuff from the mid 80s on ... only a couple of "newer" songs, like "Domino" (which was great).

Guess it depends on what you consider a "long time" fan --- I thought that "In the Cage", "Firth of Fifth", "I Know What I Like", the portion of "Cinema Show" were outstanding choices and very well played. "The Carper Crawlers" was great (except that it signaled the end of the show!)

Different tastes for different folks --- I just wanted to offer another view so as not to scare off any really old fans! If you are really a long time fan, I think you'd enjoy the show very, very much ...

While I might have chosen different songs - Cinema Show, Paperlate and The Battle of Epping Forest for instance. I would have gladly dumped In Too Deep and Tonight, Tonight and even Los Endos (since they play it every time). I thought the energy of the show was great. Phil sounded great, as did Chester, Tony, Mike and Darryl. I saw the philly show. My real seats weren't that great, but I managed to spend 1/2 hour 2nd row center until the usher kicked me out. I've never been that close - that was amazing. Ironic thing is that if I had skipped to the FRONT row, I don't think i'd have been caught. It was not ALL that I hoped for, but I never thought I would see them together again, so it was great. Carpet Crawlers was a nice way to end the set.

I agree with Rich. I thought their song selection was dark & boasting it scary... Way too loud to hear some of the wonderful melody & lyric. I actually never heard the Man in the Cage. Don't think I'd hear it aagin..

I am a great fan of Genesis and have been for many years.
I thought the stage was great but I was very disappointed in the music selection. How can you have a Genesis concert without songs like: Abacab - Illegal Alien - Paperlate just to name a few. Total disappointment and if they ever come back I won't be there.
They just came and took the money.
This is my opinion and I am sticking to it.

Thanks for posting these clips of the tour. I am going to London on July 8th for the gig and can't wait. Never thought I would see them play together again.
