I am a volunteer with Holocaust Education Week. Holocaust Education Week in it's 29th year is the largest Holocaust, genocide, racism, and hatred awareness program in North America. We run 170 programs in the Province of Ontario. This year Holocaust Education Week runs from November 1, through November 11.
The reason for my email, is I inherited (meaning that the liaison originally involved in this program had a family emergency, and was forced to go back home - nevertheless here we are) a program entitled: "PUNISHING HOMOSEXUALS IN NAZI GERMANY"
This program is taking place at 7:30 PM on Saturday, November 7, at the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, located at 115 Simpson Avenue, Toronto.
The speaker is Professor Dr. Geoffrey Giles from Florida.
The program blurb outlines the program, "There was no "gay Holocaust" under the Third Reich, but with more than two million homosexuals in Germany –
by Gestapo chief Heinrich Himmler’s own estimate - this was a problem that would eventually require a radical solution. After the Jews, homosexual inmates of the concentration camps were treated worse than any other category of prisoner, and were often singled out by guards to be murdered. Yet there was no standard or automatic punishment for supposed homosexuals under the Nazi judicial system. Prosecutors went into meticulous detail about the alleged offences in court in order for judges to decide on an appropriate punishment, with sentences frequently appealed to the Supreme Court. The problem lay in the Nazis’ inability to define exactly what constituted a “real” homosexual, as opposed to someone who had been temporarily led astray and could be “cured.”
DR. GEOFFREY GILES received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Cambridge and has been a Professor in the History Department at the University of Florida since 1978. From 2000-2001, Professor Giles was the Senior Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington, D.C. and conducted research on homosexuals during the Third Reich. He continued his work at the University of Munich in 2003-2004. Dr. Giles serves on the State of Florida Education Commissioner’s Task Force on Holocaust Education, and has co-directed a summer institute for teachers on the Holocaust at the University of Florida.
This program is generously co-sponsored by Carson Phillips, in memory of all the victims of National Socialism.
The reason for my email, is a request that you please publicize this program for me through any online media sources you have.
Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
