The triad is the most basic, fundamental and common chord. And, not surprisingly, it is also the smallest. While intervals form the smallest element of harmony, they are not classified as chords. The triad is the smallest chord and, therefore; after the harmonic interval, it is the most basic unit with which to begin when embarking on any serious study of chord theory.
