Donut Nook and the History of National Doughnut Day :-)

Before Friday, we had never heard of National Doughnut Day. In fact, when we saw National Doughnut Day on the home page of MSN last week, we thought it was a joke of some kind. After some quick Google searches, though, we learned that it was legit.

National Doughnut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to raise much-needed funds during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines. It is celebrated each year on the first Friday in June.

We are not exactly sure why this was the first year we had heard of National Doughnut Day, but even owners and employees of the Donut Nook in Vancouver WA were surprised by the overwhelming response. It seems that there were a lot of other people that just learned of National Doughnut Day and chose to celebrate. They stopped by the Donut Nook to get a dozen or two (or six!) of the delicious treats to share with their friends and coworkers.

A friend of ours who recently relocated to the area was among them. She had been looking for a place to get ‘real' doughnuts in the Vancouver area, and we suggested Donut Nook. She and the coworkers she surprised report the freshly made doughnuts from Donut Nook to be some of the best they've ever had. The place offers a varied selection, the doughnuts are substantial, both in size and texture, and they are priced fairly.

Other Clark County groups that were honored Saturday were the Battle Ground High School Band (Third Place for Out-of-State Bands with 99 Members or fewer); Clark County Mounted Patrol, equestrian group; and the Clark County Fair Court, rodeo or fair queens and courts.

Not long ago, we watched Akeelah and the Bee. It is a movie about a gifted eleven year old girl who overcomes challenges at home and makes it to the National Spelling Bee. When we saw the descriptor on NetFlix, we questioned whether we really wanted to order it or not. We are glad we did, as we very much enjoyed the movie.

There was a quote that really resonated with us and we want to share it:

"Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'who am I to be so brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are we not to be? You are a child of God: Your playing small doesn't serve the world. Moving Boxes & Discount Moving Supplies

Finding a good source of affordable moving boxes can be tough. Why add frustration to an already difficult time? We just found a website for moving boxes and discounted moving supplies. It's called www.boxesovernight.com. The website has a moving box calculator to help you determine how many boxes you will need based on the number of rooms being moved. In addition to boxes, the recommended package will include packing tape, bubble wrap and permanent markers. The per box price including these additional packing materials and free shipping looks to be less than $3 per box.

Does Your Pet Know Its Name & Address?

A recent article in The Columbian caught the attention of our friend, Cindy. The article told the story of a parrot that flew from his cage in Nagareyama, near Tokyo, and was lost. The parrot was rescued by police and, after spending a night at the station, was transferred to a local veterinarian. Though tight-beaked with the police, the parrot ultimately opened up at the vet's office, saying "I'm Mr. Yosuke Nakamura" and gave his full home address. After entertaining the staff with a few songs, Mr. Yosuke Nakamura was happily reunited with his family.

Other pets may not be quite so articulate. That's why many areas require pet licensing. Benefits of licensing include:

* pets are more likely to be united quickly with their owner
* pets will receive a longer care period at the shelter
* pets are transferred to an emergency medical care facility if they are found with an injury

Licensing protects pets in ways not often imagined. By obtaining the required pet license, responsible owners provide for the emergency services that protect their pet companions. All too often indoor pets, or pets confined to a yard, may need assistance when an owner's household faces unforeseen accidents, fire, natural disaster, or become victims of attacks by other animals. Pet license fees are the source of revenue, which support the animal ambulance, shelter, public safety and cruelty investigation services.

All dogs and cats, as well as wild and exotic pets, maintained within the city of Vancouver, and unincorporated Clark County are required to be licensed. Licenses for puppies and kittens are free. Fees are required for pets over six months old, and are valid for 12 month.

Fertile dog - $40
Altered dog - $16
Fertile Cat - $20
Altered Cat - $10
Senior discount - 50% fee reduction for one dog or cat per household. Applies to spayed or neutered pets only.
Juvenile (8 weeks to 6 months) - no fee

The 5k Breast Cancer Fundraising Walk is a noncompetitive fun walk with a rolling start allowing walkers to begin walking as early as 9am or as late as 1pm, finishing at their leisure. We have been shopping at Home Depot for years and spent thousands of dollars with them as we renovated a church into our home. It wasn't until today, though, that we learned of their online workshops and were reminded of the quantity and variety of In-Store Clinics and Workshops.

The Home Depot's educational series include Online Workshops, In-store Clinics, Do-It-Herself Clinics and Kids Workshops.

The current Online Workshop is about "Installing Crown Moulding". It's a 30 minute tutorial to help you learn all about installing crown moulding, from selecting the right style to measuring and cutting angles.

There are also In-store Clinics. We don't know if they vary across the country, May In-Store Clinics in the Vancouver/Portland area include:

In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron similar to the ones worn by Home Depot associates, and an achievement pin.

Dozer Day is a kid-friendly fair-like event where the rides are dozers, dump trucks and other heavy equipment. The event is organized by the Nutter Foundation and benefits the Parks Foundation. With a professional, licensed driver at their side, kids have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive a big yellow bulldozer, backhoe, loader or other piece of heavy equipment. It's a dream come true for kids--and great fun for the whole family!

What can the whole family do at Dozer Day?

Dozer Day is a fun event for the entire family. For grown-ups, a diamond dig and a tool dig are popular as is a picnic in the park and KUPL live on site. Camas will have its own Farmers Market, starting this Saturday, May 17. Mayor Paul Dennis will cut the ribbon as the Camas Farmers Market opens for the first time. The day will also include special kids activities, live demonstrations and live music.

The market will feature farm fresh produce and local flowers. Local farms and vendors will include: 6 Acre Farm, Bruns Bakery, Camas Roots, Chor Vang Flowers, Draper Girls Farm, Hill Tree Farms, Nature’s Choice, Nutz R Us, Purple Rain Vineyard, Scented Acres, Silver Star Vinery and Twin Brooks Herb Farm.

The market will be held on 5th street between Cedar and Birch in historic downtown Camas, and is scheduled to be open every Saturday from 9a-1p through October 4th.

The goal is to support local farmers as well as provide members of the community with fresh, off the farm, produce. All farmers are encouraged to visit www.CamasFarmersMarket.org regarding space availability.

We have to apologize in advance to our daughter, Allison, who is a manager at Starbucks … but we have found a new favorite place for coffee called Caffe Piccolo Paradiso.

Caffe Piccolo Paradiso is a charming Italian café that positions itself as a place “… where coffee is an experience.” You will notice it is different from the moment you step through the front door. The Tuscan inspired décor is warm, comfortable and inviting, with artfully faux-finished aged stucco walls. You will find a variety of artwork and accessories, including a famous photograph playfully recreated in front of the store. You will find a variety of places to sit from small tables in the front windows where you can sit peacefully watching the passers-by … or a large table closer to the counter that will accommodate a small group of friends, clients or coworkers.

The helpful, friendly staff will cheerfully make your favorite coffee drink to order. The flavor of the coffee and other ingredients used at Caffe Piccolo Paradiso truly set them apart. Other beverage choices include tea, steamers, Italian sodas, San Pellegrino, and a selection of wines.

We recently had out-of-town clients who stayed at a great little Bed and Breakfast called the Briar Rose Inn Bed and Breakfast. We had visited the home a couple years ago when it was still being renovated. Have a Home that Needs Help? Here's a Cheap Fix for Nasty Floors!

Do you have a nasty floor that you want to fix, but don't want to spend a fortune? Check this out!

As many of you know, we have spent the last year and a half renovating an old church into our home. Part of our challenge was to find affordable products (the place is over 4,000 square feet), that still looked nice. We considered installing hardwood floors, but realized we'd be spending upward of $50k even if we installed them ourselves! We knew we needed to find an alternative.

We were at our local Home Depot and one of the employees turned us on to TrafficMasterTM Allure Resilient Vinyl Plank Flooring. It's an amazing new vinyl product that looks more like real wood that any of the laminate floors we've seen. You can even feel the texture of the woodgrain and knot holes!

Better yet, the flooring is waterproof and easy to install ... even for the beginnning do-it-yourselfer. It can be layed over most any old flooring that is somewhat level, and can be cut with a utility knife (no saw or special tools required!).

The finished product looks great, is very durable, and many people won't realize that it's not traditional wood flooring. Several people have asked us if we installed the floors ourselves or if we refinished the original floors. An appraiser was even surprised to learn that the floor was vinyl!

We understand the product is exclusive to Home Depot and, right now, it's being advertised in our market for as low as $1.69 per square foot. You can't even get carpet installed for that price!

When we first came across the product, it was only available in oak, cherry and hickory (hickory is our favorite). Looking at the Home Depot website, though, it looks like it is now available in a number of other finishes including country pine, wild cherry, antique elm, barnwood, piedmont ash, apple blond, dark walnut, golden maple, summer pine, bamboo, and a number of 'tile look' finishes.

We have found cleaning and maintenance to be quite easy. We vacuum regularly with a hard surface setting/attachment. Rather than using a mop or other similar tool that could leave a residue, we use our steamer every week or so. Despite what some people may tell you, we don't recommend any type of sealer. The product has a 25 year warrenty and, in our opinion, looks best with it's natural 'matte' finish.

Magikal Miniatures: A Unique Party Opportunity for Children

We had the opportunity to meet Kim Pierson while visiting the Woodland Tulip Festival this weekend, along with Timmy (a miniature horse that
stand only 30 inches tall) and a baby Wallaby!

Kim has recently launched a business called Magikal Miniatures. Based in Woodland WA and servicing Clark and Cowlitz counties, Magikal Miniatures offers a unique, fun and educational party experience for children.

‘Tiny Tim’ and family will come right to your home or nearby park and offer carriage rides for parties of up to 12 children, as well as instruction and hands-on experience feeding and petting small animals. Children will also get a chance to touch a newborn foal and learn how mommy Farah takes care of her babies. A visit to Hulda Klager Lilac Days 2008 in Woodland WA

We took at short drive from Vancouver up to Woodland this weekend to check out the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens during the Annual Lilac Festival and we're glad we did. The gardens are absolutely beautiful, boasting some of the best and largest specimens of several tree varieties in addition to the beautiful lilac and flower gardens.

The Story of the Lilac Lady

Hulda Klager came to the US from Germany with her family in 1865 when she was two years old. Her family moved to Woodland, Washington in 1877 when she was 13 years old, purchased farmland and built a home.

While she was recovering from an illness in 1903, some of her friends brought her a book by Luther Burbank, a renowned hybridizer at the time. In 1905 she began hybridizing lilacs and by 1910 she had created 14 new varieties. By 1920 she had developed so many new varieties that she decided to hold an open house each spring when the lilacs were in full bloom to share her efforts with other lilac enthusiasts. This practice caused her to become known as "The Lilac Lady."

Around 1930 neighboring towns began sending delegations during Mrs. Klager's "Lilac Week" to choose one of the new varieties she had developed to be named for their community. In this manner lilac varieties such as the "City of Longview," "City of Kalama," "City of Gresham," and "City of Woodland" were designated. Through the years, Mrs. Klager has been honored by many organizations for her work as a leading hybridizer of lilacs.

A Tough Row to Hoe

But Hulda Klager's career as a hybridizer had many challenges to go along with her great success. Following the death of her husband, Frank Klager, in 1922, she contemplated abandoning her work with lilacs, almost throwing away a number of hand-pollinated plants she had taken a special interest in. But her son Fritz insisted that she continue to nurture them and from these plants came some of her very best lilacs.

The spring of 1948 brought another great adversity when the swirling waters of the Columbia River swept across her property, wiping out her lilac gardens and nearly every other shrub on the place. Only the big trees withstood the flood but undaunted and at the age of 83, she set about rebuilding her garden. Many people who had purchased her lilacs in the past returned starts to her so she could replace her losses.

It took two years and a great deal of work but in 1950 she was able to again open her gardens for Lilac Week once again - a practice she continued until her death in 1960.

A National Landmark

After her death in 1960 at the age of 96, Mr. & Mrs. Van Eaton cared for the estate for a time but sold it after it became too much for them to handle. When the Woodland Federated Garden Club heard it was to be bulldozed to make way for an industrial site, they decided to save it and succeeded in having it declared a state and national historic site.

In order to get a grant-in-aid to restore the house, it would be necessary to purchase the entire property. One of the members of the Woodland Federated Garden Club, Daisy Button Grotvik, traded seven acres of land she owned in the Woodland bottoms for the four and a half acres of the Klager property. She then deeded the property to the newly formed Hulda Klager Lilac Society, a nonprofit organization that had been formed in 1976 to administer the estate. In this way the land was secured, but the house also had to be purchased. The ladies of the newly formed Hulda Klager Lilac Society raised half of the purchase price from the community of Woodland and the state of Washington matched it with a like amount. Finally, the contractor who owned all the trees and shrubs, Daryl Brown, generously donated all of them to the Society so that the entire estate was intact and ready for restoration.

Visit the Garden

Each year, thousands of visitors step back in time to discover the 1880's Victorian farmhouse and country garden that comprise the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, a national historic site located 30 minutes north of Portland, Oregon at 115 South Pekin Road, Woodland, Washington 98674. The woodshed, water tower, windmill and gardens have all been restored through another grant-in-aid from Washington State and by the Hulda Klager Lilac Society, a nonprofit organization with approximately 95% of its work force derived from volunteers.

The garden is open daily from 10a - 4p from now until May 11, 2008. The cost is just $2 and is payable at the gate.

WOW! 653 Clark County Listings under $200k

As real estate agents in today’s market, we keep hearing ‘Have we hit the bottom yet?’ The truth is that it will likely be months after we hit bottom before we realize that it actually happened and, by then, prices will be on the rise again.

So is now a good time to buy? For many, the answer will be ‘yes’.

Interest rates are still at near historic lows … and the selection of homes is incredible. Just this morning, our RMLS data indicated that there are 4,693 properties available in the Vancouver WA / Clark County area. Of those:

• 1,545 (nearly a third) were priced at/below $250,000
• 1,053 (more than 22%) were priced at/below $225,000
• 653 (nearly 14%) were priced at/below $200,000

Of the 653 properties priced at/below $200,000, 283 were detached (single family) homes. Of the 283 detached homes, 96 are priced at/below $175,000 and 24 are prices at/below $150,000. 3 of the properties are actually priced under $100,000!

Of the 24 homes priced at/below $150,000, 1 is bank-owned, 1 is a trustee sale, and 7 are being marketed as short sales. However, 11 of the homes appear to be standard sales of pre-owned home, 3 are brand new homes under construction, and 1 is a vacation property at Lake Merwin Campers Hideaway.

Square footage of the homes priced at/below $150,000 are being reported as low as 640 sq ft (new construction in Battle Ground) and as high as 3,168 sq ft (a former church in Amboy).

"If you don't like change, leave it here" is the message posted on the tip jar at Mon Ami Cafe.

Mon Ami is a quaint but quirky shop in Uptown Village that offers specialty coffee drinks featuring fresh, locally roasted Stumptown beans, a selection of fresh crepes made with organic white and buckwheat flour from Bob's Red Mill, all in a comfortable, casual environment in the Uptown Village area of Vancouver.

Our favorite is the triple mocha, served in an oversized mug with artfully decorated foam topping. The varied crepe selection includes cinnamon & sugar (my wife's favorite), jam crepe, PB&J crepe, PB, Banana, Cinnamon & Honey crepe, ham, pear & brie crepe, ham & swiss crepe, and a salmon & tomato crepe, among others.

Another sign in the restaurant playfully states "Unattended children will be given a triple espresso and sent home with a free puppy". Gotta love 'em!

The cafe walls proudly display varying collections of artwork. Mon Ami also has a selection of beer and wine, and offers live music every Saturday from 5:30 - 7:30p.

The Story of Mon Ami

Entrepreneurial ideas brewed while Juliana Viveralli and Claire Ghormley lived, worked, and socialized in their favorite Vancouver neighborhoods. In 2003 Claire opened Twisted Shots Espresso on West McLoughlin, the first business in Downtown Vancouver to feature Portland's StumptownTM Coffee. Since then she has honed her skills as an expert barista and baker. Juliana grew up with a family tradition in the restaurant business working for her grandparents and learning from her father who is a chef and entrepreneur. Juliana received her MBA (with focus in Small Business) from WSU in December of 2006. The idea to team-up and open a creperie sparked one day over some espresso.

In French, Mon Ami means "My Friend." The cafe opened in June of 2006 after remodeling the space at 1906 Main using as much recycled materials as possible. The cafe is one of the first restaurants in the area to compost all their paper waste. Claire and Juliana share a distinct interest in the arts, cooking, good wine, micro-brew beer, and top-notch coffee, not to mention fervent enthusiasm for Downtown and Uptown Vancouver.
