http://www.healthmad.com/Conditions-and-Disea…
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow and it is an abnormal proliferation of white blood cells. Leukemia is a term broadly used for covering a spectrum of diseases.
Anemia is a deficiency of hemoglobin, a molecule found in the red blood cells (RBC’s). Hemoglobin normally carries oxygen from the lungs’ tissues. Anemia leads to hypoxia (luck of oxygen in the organ). All human cells depend on oxygen for survival.
REPORT ON NEW TREATMENT FOR ANEMIA
There is a new treatment that was found on the 7th of February, 2008. Many patients found with chronic cancer disease like Anemia have to contend with the severe fatigue that accompanies anemia and this impedes the patient’s daily lives. Recently the hormone EPO has been administered to many of these patients to alleviate the anemia. Treatment with EPO is not always effective; unfortunately not every patient responds to this therapy. Scientists connected to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven have been doing research on the role of the Gas6 protein. This substance has proven successful when given to rats with anemia, without any side effects that the use of EPO entails. Gas6 contributes to a reinforcement of EPO effect. Gas6 might, in the future, be a new treatment for anemia.
NEW TREATMENT FOR LEUKEMIA
Sorafenib, a new treatment for Leukemia was found on the 16th of May, 2005, for patients with Chronic Eosinophilic Leukemia (CEL). CEL is currently treated with Glivec. However, researchers found that prolonged usage can cause resistance to Glivec. Researchers have found that a drug called Sorafenib works on patients that have developed resistance to Glivac. It is important for patients with CEL because it provides a new approach for the treatment on specific forms of Leukemia. Researchers have proven that it not only works but the combination of targeted drugs provides a much greater chance of a lifelong effective treatment, which patients have to take for the rest of their lives. It is now on the market.
