We all know the unexamined life is not worth living. But what about the unexamined toaster oven? Is it worth living with? If we are what we eat, are we also what we own? What stories do our things contain? What wisdom do they conceal? This site is my effort to find out, to become an anthropologist not only of my own material culture, but of the culture and society we all share. The goal is to reflect on everything I own—from pill bottles to pillow cases, from death notices to DVDs--with all the insight and honesty I can muster. I hope you, too, will be inspired to spend a few minutes taking stock.
