Over the last 15 years I have received hundreds of messages from closet atheists. Most of them are sad and many are tragic. Since marriages are often made miserable by religion, divorces often result. Because of that, many atheists find that closet very appealing. Keep your thoughts to yourself. Why cause trouble? But that atheist closet is a sad, lonely place to be. For example, if you and your spouse have different religious beliefs, the best you can hope for is an armed truce. The same can be said for you and any close relatives or friends. Armed truce. But biting your tongue can be a painful, try-your-patience experience if you do not believe in any God and a loved one prattles on and on about God’s mercy or whatever. It’s hard to keep quiet.
