Je vois la vie en rose (Love and Sex)

"I see life in rosy hues," that's a crude translation of a very famous French love song that every Parisian hums and every Francophile knows by-heart. The song sums up what I have been saying all along. Let me continue in this strain for a while, the song goes "Il me dit des mots d'amour, Des mots de tous les jours,… " Now let's see… A crude translation would be as follows, " he tells me words of love, words of everyday."

French are said to be very romantic, a man will spot a beautiful woman at a roadside café,he will go across the road to the florist and pick up a bunch of roses and have them sent across to the lady sipping her coffee. The lady is surprised, she looks up and sees the man on the other side of the street. He bows, blows a kiss and goes on his way. Now you have two people who have made each other very happy.

"Tell me words of love" … now isn't that a wonderful thing. What do the words of love mean? In my book, I have described how love and intimacy are an essential precursor of sex. Love is a prelude to strengthen the intimacy. What exactly is love? Yes, I agree, poets are great in describing love. Shakespeare, Browning, Spenser and a whole legion of poets have written reams and reams about love but what is love in plain English? Now let's see… suppose we find what is not love… that does sound a bit easy-peasy, isn't it? If you find some quaint English expression cropping up, blame it on my stint at Cambridge, UK. Being possessive or jealous is not love. How can you "cage" a person and call it love? Unadulterated lust is not love, for lust is a baser instinct. You cannot make a person love you through fear. You cannot hold on to a person, cling to the person, smothering that person with what you think is love, for all this is not love. Neither can you say, "I love you so you must love me in return." This, to put it mildly, is plain old emotional blackmail. To utter words of love, there must be spontaneity and feeling and a bonding with your partner.
