Global Day of Action October 6th Concept Note
Aim:
To draw attention to the continued oppression of the Burmese people and to keep/build the pressure on national governments and the UNSC to do all that they can to alleviate that suffering.
Objectives:
Substantial national and international media coverage focussed on a day of demonstrations in as many capitals as possible.
Clear messages delivered to national governments and the UNSC that they must do all they can to end the suffering of the people of Burma.
Clear messages to Burmese, Chinese, Indian, Russia and European governments that the people of the world are watching their actions.
Messages:
The UN Security Council must act now to alleviate the crisis.
The International Community/ the XXXX government must do more/keep the pressure on until the military crackdown ends and all political prisoners are released.
The people of the world stand with the people of Burma.
Concept:
In as many countries as possible there will be demonstrations in capital cities demanding action.
The aim is to have as many similar components across all of the demonstrations to ensure we generate an international news story.
The elements we want to keep the same around the world are:
The starting time: 12 Noon Saturday 6th October (local time, but dont worry if you need to be flexible with this).
The demonstrators: Should all be wearing red headbands in solidarity with the Monks in Burma. (this could be limited to the leaders of the march if you cant get enough headbands)
The action: Demonstrators removing the headbands and tying them onto key landmarks e.g. Golden Gate Bridge, the gates of Parliament etc
The picture: Monks or other religious leaders scattering petals from a bridge into a river (the bridge is to symbolise the desire for reconciliation, the petals the lives of the Burmese people currently at risk).
Were aware that not everyone has bridges to use or that the timing may have to be flexible so if there is one thing to concentrate on please make it people wearing red headbands and towards the end of the march the marchers tying these red pieces of cloth onto a building, religious shrine etc. This is the critical bit we want to keep the same globally so please do your best! (you should be able to just cut up red cloth to use as headbands)
