There is a real need for citizens to look into America's prisons because so many prisoners are being released in worse shape than when they went in: PTSD, physical diseases, helplessness and rage are common in released people. In a very real sense, we are our brothers' keeper, because what we allow prisons to create will all come back to haunt society.

Before Obama is done with his term, let's start now, to contact him about making life in prison tolerable, about kicking out the bad ass guards who think it is funny to mentally screw with inmates, to stop the beatings, the stabbings, the daily mental stress, the rapes, the gangs, the lack of true educational resources, the lousy food, the cold temperatures and the heat, the lack of communications between inmates and their loved ones, you name it and I have only thought of a few.

There can be enough of us to do this.
