writing a refund check. A credit memo was recorded as well as the refund check. Attempting to connect the two thru the receive payments window as per help instructions but this creates a duplicate entry which leaves an incorrect balance in the Accounts Receivable account for that customer (I have an older version of quickbooks)

I recently ran 2 Microsoft windows updates and since then I have not been able to open Quickbooks. I get the following message

Quickbooks has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something , the information you are working on may be lost.

This has happen before and I fixed is somehow but I can't remember exactly how. I believe I disabled my virus softwarem which I have done again. But I still can't get Quickbooks to load.
