Racing Rules of Sailing - Look to Windward

http://rrsstudy.blogspot.com/

This blog is about the Racing Rules of Sailing. Anything to do with the rules. On or off the water, in the protest room or umpiring in a rubber duck, attending a seminar or reading a news item. If it involves the RRS, I will post about it.

Because my evenings seem to be filled with meetings and preparations, I don’t have much time to write about the changes in the rules which are effective next January. I promise to get back to these. For now, I’ve shamelessly copied the text from...

A good number of LTW-Readers are racing in a virtual world using simulators. I’ve been tracking some of what they’re doing on several forums. Apart from never have to deal with injury, I guess the rules play out pretty much the same. In this rea...

I'm not quite sure about your question. Perhaps you can tell me a little more?

Rule 17.2 - not sailing below your proper course, if there's a boat within two lengths who is steering a course to leeward - has been deleted in the RRS 2009-2012.
In your description there's a boat to windward, so even if rule 17.2 was still valid, it wouldn't apply.

A leeward boat can only hail for room to tack if:
- she sailing close hauled or above
- and is approaching an obstruction (for which she must make a substantial course change)
She has that right regardless of sailing her proper course or not.

Even if she's subject to rule 17 (in the new RRS) she can hail for room to tack if that tack was her proper course..

In short, there are more variables to establish before I can answer....

A leeward boat needing to tack in order not to sail below her proper course, hails the windward boat to give room to tack. Is the leeward boat entitled?
