The coast up that way is lined with lifeguard stations. Nobody was attending them at this time of the year, but I guess in the summer these beaches are absolutely buzzing....
Rock-bashing
16 February 2009: Looking back the way I came, the sea was bashing the rocks as the wind got up. By the time I returned to camp, I’d had more than one soaking. ;)...
Seaweed-strewn
16 February 2009: The storm had thrown up swathes of seaweed. That stuff used to freak me out when I was a kid…the texture is just plain weird. Now, it’s just part of the sea-thing....
The other side of the underpass
16 February 2009: Here’s the other side of the walkway/underpass, in its own personal lake. The structure is painted top to toe with lovely sea-themed murals....
Looking out to sea
There’s something amazing about the ocean, about standing beside the water and looking out to sea–especially on a stormy day. It takes up the emptiness inside you, and fills it with sound....
Not the underpass, either
16 February 2009: The walkway, too, was closed off by water. I leaned over to see the beach at the other side. Another guy spotted me; we waved to one another. To get to the beach I had to sprint (more of a scamper, really) across broad highway 1....
No way through
16 February 2009: We limped up the coast to north of Malibu, where we stayed at the Carrillo State Beach for several days. It poured with rain. The first day we were here, we lost one of our $80 walkie-talkies, which presumably someone is enjoying ...
