Sanatan means one that has no beginning and no end. It just exists. Just as origin and existence of God is beyond comprehension and human reasoning so is true for Hinduism. This is echoed by the Hindu scriptures like the Ramayan, Gita, Veda, etc. About God, Goswami Tulsidas says in Sri Ramcharitmanas "So janai jehi dehu janai". Meaning "O Lord, only that person knows You whom You let know about Yourself". To better understand the Hindu religion one must read the literature like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Veda, Upnishad, Sri Ramcharitmanas, etc. Some of these are available at www.ramcharitmanas.in for free download.
