The size and type of system you choose is a trade-off between the amount of money you want to invest and the amount of electricity you want to produce. Now the average american home uses approximately 13,000kWh per year or 5kWp. You can ask your utility provider or you can look at your electricity bills to calculate how much electricity your home typically uses. But remember, you can save yourself money even if you do not cover all your electricity needs with a solar system. Most solar systems provide a portion of the electricity demand a home or business requires. In other words even if you have a system that covers your electrical needs, do to cloudy days or unforseen high demand in electrical output you will need to pull from the grid at times. The Bonus of this is that if there are days that you don’t use much energy you can actually sell your energy to the power company
