When Mothering meets Teaching
The end of the semester approaches. Yesterday I handed back research papers to various groans and complaints. My favorite was the "Did anyone get an A?" To which I replied, "Yes. Plenty of people." (Just not you, you B student who has visions of gran...
Paper Writing Tips
For the past ten years I have graded college-level papers for a wide variety of professors and classes. I have taught graduating seniors heading to graduate programs at top ten programs. And I have taught incoming freshmen coming from mediocre (to pu...
The Berlin Wall Remembered
Or maybe its remembering the remembrance of the Berlin Wall...Anyway, I clearly remember standing in my family's study (the room with the desks, not like the Victorian style with hardwood paneling and floor to ceiling books) watching CNN. Germans jum...
Participating in Nanowrimo again
This is my third attempt at Nano. If you've never heard of it, check out their home page. Basically it is a vastly growing group of people who all try to write a 50000 word novel from scratch, start to finish, during the month of November. In its 11t...
Back in the Saddle Again
Last weekend I attended my first academic conference in three years. It is the first time I have presented anything academic to colleagues since graduating in 2007. I have to thank the friend who encouraged me to submit a panel proposal with her as i...
Choosing a research topic
Whether you are a college freshmen or a tenured-professor jumping into a new project can be daunting at best. I spent what felt like eternal seasons trying to find the perfect dissertation topic. I cannot count the number of topics that were rejected...

This is a blog about surviving a PhD program and coming out alive on the other side, written by Gwen Nelson, who describes herself as a PhD survivor, Mom, sometime professor, and aspiring author. I can attest to the latter; her blog truly shows her love of writing. Remembering my own encounters with other academics (and alas, their blogs) they do not always come across as particularly funny or witty, but Gwen is. As a former graduate student and professor in spe myself I felt at home immediately.
The blog posts are small anecdotes from her life as a previous graduate student and now professor. In fact, many ancedotes are geared directly towards (her) students and contain tips on what to do (e.g. how to skim a book or paper for useful information) and what not to do (e.g. don't plagiarize). There's even a category for 'Horror Stories' from campus. My favorite is the story about a scary guy in the library, definitely not someone you expect to meet in a public library.
