I have been viewing your blog for the last two years and very helpful in fighting discrimination in the workplace. I work for the Postal Service in Columbus, Ohio, were I have been trying to get promoted since 1972, after serving in the Vietnam war, College degrees in various fields, and being selected to management initial level in 1984. But since then no promotion, after over 20 odd attempts with applications, and EEO complaints, which to me lead to colaboration/collution between Headquarters, EEOC, Admn Judges, and the local EEO office (with Black eeo councelors)denying any advances; plus I was demoted, with no hearing, because I wrote a letter to the Area managers' concerning this delima. The intersectional theory has arrived to those black women who benefited prior to these bad economic times where white women and men were selected over them with less seniority and work experience. I have attempted to file with District courts, MSPB, and NLPB but they all are saying leave it to the Local Columbus District to handle their own problems with no interference from the other agencies. I am writing to my congressman's and DOL; plus the attorney general office.

The Chilling Affect of Retaliation

Everyone is a heartbeat away from another individual because as big as this world is it is yet just an island. If you sit back and think you'll find that you were never alone. Reach out to every opportunity of support that you can they are waiting for you!

I worked for an insurance company for many years, I was severely retaliated against following a complaint that I made about being treated unfairly, thus discriminated against. The insurance company was very hostile work environment festered by the fact that so many people were related to one another and had personal ties outside of the company. Some of these same people had relationships that date back 10, 20 and 30 year and most of them were in management.

As expected it was a recipe for anyone outside of the in-crowd. In this hostile environment they undermined the Civil Rights laws by creating a "chilling effect," that's when people are too afraid to complain so although they have the Ethics Hotline available no one has the guts to use it for the purposes that it was intended and would not report serious violations which could result in their termination. Following my complaint the company tried reverse psychology by trying to make it appear as though I was the problem so that they could justify their termination. The question I have is why all of a sudden after so many years employment did I turn into this Jeckel and Hyde personality only after I filed a complaint. Or was this so called Jeckel and Hyde personality just another attempt for them to justify violating my civil rights. HR staff and corporate headquarters staff and counsel have a host of legal experts at their fingertips and the internet is loaded with lawyers who want their business so bad they even hand over some of the tactics that corporations use to undermine employees. Just because I became their natural enemy following my complaint that doesn't mean that they have the right retaliate against me.

So when they handed me over to the wolves once my anonymity was exposed to the manager I reported and let them take their shots at retaliating against me they did so under the scrutiny of a watchful staff and not everyone agrees with managements behavior. So at the hands of their plot I found myself...

1. being attacked by a modern lynch mob
2. feeling undermined by everyone
3. had your credibility attacked
4. humiliated
5. lied on by countless people some of whom who
were afraid for their jobs too
6. told that I was aggressive
7. told that I was not a team player (that point always gets me, if all of the team is one color and you are another what in the world do they mean?)
8. had your dept labeled as dysfunctional
9. been forced to participate in a Team Building class because they were painting me as the problem the minute I had filed that complaint.
10. working with extremely hostile people
11. called out for a fist fight by a co-supervisor
12. felt isolated
13. was depressed
14. felt like no one would listen to me because my situation seemed so bizarre --- but then in the midst of my confusion I just looked to the hills!

So to all of you suffering what I suffer, don't be discouraged, stand in the midst of your hostile situation regardless of how they may twist things out of proportion to serve their purposes. Even if they find a reason to terminate you be rest assured in the fact that it all occurred after your original complaint.

I declare that other people will have the courage to come forward too, because I do not believe that everyone will perjure themselves for the sake of a company. So if this happens to you, don't wonder where you are just stand in the midst of your persecution!
