Unchained Restaurants

A place to talk about favorite locally owned restaurants: that longtime family restaurant that just keeps getting better, a new place that just opened in your city, or the joint you can't miss while driving around upstate New York.

‘Tis the season to share suggestions
‘Tis the season to share more suggestions from Unchained Restaurant readers: From Terry: I love your blog. I agree, most of the time locally owned and operated is better than a chain. I have a suggestion. I actually took my wife there (fr...
Dominick’s does it right in Syracuse
I love Thanksgiving. To me, it’s one of the least stressful holidays. No gift-buying. No last-minute party invitations. Just food, and family, and bad football. It’s not a fake holiday, like Valentine’s Day, and it doesn’t r...
Finding our way to The Beaver Den
I have a tendency, especially when driving here in mostly rural southern Madison County, to take the road ahead of me that seems to be going in the general direction I need to be going. “General” can sometimes work out quite well, with...
Show your pride at fairgrounds event
I want to pass along information about an interesting event this weekend at the state fairgrounds in Syracuse. It’s the Pride of New York program’s Harvest Festival, which will feature more than 100 vendors selling local foods and prod...
Eating local and buying local is a win-win
I try to eat at locally owned restaurants and I try to shop at locally owned businesses. I accomplished both things this Saturday. A gold star for me, I suppose. Wife L and I took advantage of the terrific weekend weather and drove south, first to Bo...
Refueling after excercising your brain
I go to museums to discover something new. I go to restaurants to eat. When I can do both things on the same day, it can be a pretty good day. Such was the case on a recent Saturday when I took in the outstanding exhibition Turner to Cezanne at the ...

DeRuyter's well kept secret is out of the box!!! The Red & White Cafe is the place for breakfast, lunch and a limited dinner menu!! It's located on Rte. 13 half way between Cortland and Cazenovia. I discovered the cafe this summer when I was at camp on DeRuyter Lake. The cafe is a restored historic building done in a tastefully vintage look; and did I mention the terrific staff!!
They use local food product's with beautiful baked goods, and home made bread.
This is the ideal stop for leaf peepers driving through the fabulous Finger Lakes Region 15 minute drive from Cazenovia; 20 minutes from Cortland; 40 minutes from Syracuse and well worth the ride. and They live up to their Mission Statement: " we strive to bring you the best in fresh local food products, home-style baked goods and amazing coffee". Bread is baked on the premises, woman owned and operated, friendly staff, and the food is great!!! My only regret is that I'm closing up my camp and heading home.
