Life of a blind person.
Discuss how the world might look to you and how you could use your other senses to test your visual perceptions.
The world would look very discouraging at first, but it would be like living in a fog because you will be able only to see objects and forms very blurred. You aren’t completely blind so that is an advantage because you would already have a knowledge of locations in your house such as the kitchen and the bathroom, and where you keep things such as your clothing, your kitchen utensils, your towels, broom, etc. The house is a good place to test visual perceptions: you feel running water, hear it, and see different light and dark shades near windows. You can feel window frames and doors to confirm sight patterns and their locations. These other sensations could be associated and applied out doors as well (you can feel differences in a dirt walk and a cement sidewalk; you can smell flowers, food, garbage, etc. and associate these with visual patterns).
Be sure to mention your perception of forms, size, distance, and depth as well as your visual organization.
The visual system in humans allows people to assimilate information from the environment. The act of seeing is when the eyes lens focuses an object and its surroundings into the light-sensitive membrane in the back of the eye which is called the retina. Actually the retina is a part of the brain that is isolated to serve as a transducer for the conversion of patterns of light into neuronal signals. The photoreceptive cell of the retina allows the lens of the eyes to focus on the retina, which detects the light photons and responds by producing neural impulses. If only the retina is working, you won’t have focus. You will see only light and dark colors, blurry and very foggy. (Wikipedea)
Discuss how your hearing, touch, and vestibular sense might help you determine whether your visual perceptions were accurate or illusory.
When a person loses their sight they gain more strength in the rest of their senses. The sense of hearing is unbelievably sharp; they can tell if some one else is present in the room.
You be able to use your sense of touch to recognize things and also to read. By using your sense of smell you can tell when something is burning in the kitchen or you can use the sense of hearing to know when to turn the stove down before your food starts sizzling and burning. Again you can use your sense of hearing to recognize a person by the sound or the tone of their voice. Through learning these patterns in your other senses and relating them to the patterns you see, you could confirm that your visual perceptions are accurate. You would learn to associate these sensual inputs with certain objects and events.
