The Women's Hair Loss Project is one woman's journey though life dealing with hair loss at a young age. Women suffering with hair loss are encouraged to share their own stories. It is a community for women, a place to share and learn from each other.

SharonThis blog is not really of use for the unfortunate souls that have experienced massive hair loss. This is just a report of my experiences. Although I used to have a very thick head of hair, I have experienced hair loss for years. My hair loss escalated during the past year to losing over 200 hairs a day. I have gone to numerous doctors--most had sympathy but only offered a tough it out philosophy. Finally, I got my personal physician to listen to me. Since I already took a lot of other blood pressure medicine (original BP of 200+/140+), I convinced her to discontinue some medicine (Guanfacine and triamterene HCL) and put me on a very low daily dose of spironolactone and oral minoxidil, which I take every other day. My blood pressure is now under fantastic control122/72. I had some relief from hair loss but the real turn around came a few months later when I also choose to discontinue Zoloft. My hair loss, and excessive sweating, which is I believe is detrimental to hair growth, stopped almost immediately. I average less than 5 hairs a day now. This has continued for about 6 months now. I also feel better and my hair does seem fuller. (A little more body hair is also a result of the medications but it certainly was no deterrent to me and can be easily dealt with cosmetically.) I would never recommend that someone stop taking Zoloft without consulting their doctor. Zoloft was originally prescribed to me to combat not depression but stress from a very fast paced job. I do not expect to re-grow my original head of hair but these changes have resulted in better health and the first relief from hair loss in a decade. I wonder if our pharmaceutical society has spawned such a wave of female hair loss. Without a controlled study, I cannot prove that these changes can reproduce the results that I achieved. I also cannot verify which medication change produced my results. I wish that serious medical researchers would investigate the medication link to hair loss. Please review your medications very carefully with your doctor, give these changes some thoughts and insist that your concerns be taken very seriously as your hair loss can also be an indication of other underlying health issues. By the way, I tried many of the snake oil products but only lost money in addition to more hair. Good luck to all of you.
