  There are 19 of them in all. I don't know what the requirements are to unlock all the avatars. I just simply played the game in its entirety several times, which seemed to do the trick....

  That's what Amazon says in the package tracking section. I had this game for the GBA, and must say, it is a classic. Puyo Pop Fever is not as good as this one, mainly for its girly graphics (and the fact that Carbuncle isn't featured in the game)....
