Cattle are born to be eaten by us. Why not the same for Humans ? So the central idea of the Novel is that Humans are being breeded by Extra-Terrestrials of course to work for them as slaves but if we stop there that would be the same idea as in Matrix.

The innovation of the Novel would be that to be able to live they need Energy and that they don't have any physical form because they live in another dimension so they don't feed themselves with flesh animals like us but they feed from pure energy that come from our ... emotions.

And you can guess this would be an interesting theme as it would mix scifi with psychlogy.
