As ideas to pick and choose from to supplement the more traditional blog awareness strategies, I appreciate your addressing some out-of-the-box possibilities.
Most of those mentioned I see DO count on the blogger planning to shell out some dough first, of course-- thinking of it more, I suppose, in terms of small entrepreneurial business than simply a blog site. It would be interesting to know how much the average blogger-for-money invests in their own site, prior to actually making money through it themselves.
Has anyone here set aside a budget for their own web promotion? I think that would be interesting to know. -
I know some bloggers that pump half of their earnings back into their networks, and blog sites. If you think about it, to me it would make sense to do so if blogging is your means of income. However, i know a ton of bloggers that choose not to reinvest into their blog sites.

Find blogs you like and read and comment in them. Chances are if you like them then you at least have something in common with the writer, which means that readers who enjoy reading their blogs may enjoy yours. The writer may even pop in from time to time and comment on your blog, perhaps bringing other readers with them.
I have gotten some new readers this way (I believe). Though that wasn't my initial intention. -
