I have £150,000 cash to invest in a project or two and would like a minimum return of 30% and a preferable return of around 50% - has any one got any good suggestions.

If you want to send me a private shout thats fine or you can email me, shout me for my email address.

If anyone has a good income stream they want to sell I would be interested and of course this would be subject to the relevant due diligence etc.

Wind and solar power renewable energy looks good.
Good luck though, I have no experience in either.

Thank you Jeunelle - you were posting on my discussion just at the same time I was posting on yours about what are our likes about the opposite sex!

Now, about my friend..... I think I'll need to get some perlimanary questions out of the way before we can entertain any potential future connection.......
    9. inbusiness
Then you had better shout me
    10. Sylvia
let's start with a few basics:

      Height?
      Are you married?
      Do you have children?
      Do you live alone?
Do you dance and if so, have you ever danced with the devil under the pale blue sky?
What is the perfect first date?

and.... if by chance this all works out, I'm coming to the UK too!!!! My husband and I want to see Big Ben
    11. Jeunelle
Jesus Sylvia, you sure don't like to waste any time.... lmao
    12. Sylvia

Now that this thread has been totally high-jacked and has absolutely nothing to do with the title - I apologize to readers about that and I am guilty of going along with this - it's all Silvia's and Jeunelles fault!!! And I must say much more fun for a Friday evening!

So I might start this thread again at another time
    15. Sylvia
Jeunelle, I just got the answers I was looking for and I am very very impressed with his credentials

Ok kids, the rest is up to you.....

wooops, sorry Inbusiness, in my defense my first response to this thread was on topic and I think somewhat valuable.

I feel so guilty for highjacking this thread....hehehe
Sylvia you are a riot, what can I do with you?
Ok let's not trouble the poor man anymore, until I figure out what to do.

    18. Sylvia
well, I am not done with you two yet, there is work to be done yet.
    19. Jeunelle
      @Sylvia....Oh No, that's what I'm afraid of.
  3. Sylvia
If I'm not mistaken that converts to just a little over $200,000 USD and you want a minimum return of 30% but would prefer 50%, what sort of time frame are you looking to get that kind of return on your investment?

Personally, considering the economic state of the world you wont be getting that kind of return on your money for a very very long time.

If you are looking for a business idea, take your money and invest it in either a US or Canadian based Intermodal transportation company. Do some research and you might be very surprised to see who and what companies are investing heavily in intermodal trans. in North America.
  4. inbusiness
Thank you Sylvia - not heard of that before I will take a look - this sort of return is possible if you invest in a small to medium sized business - I am looking at a couple right now in the UK, one of which is £200,000 and gives a return of 50% - so this might be the one, but wanted to feel out any other things on the net.

With the coming inflationnary tsunami, I would invest in commodities or mining companies:
    Oil: Sclumberger, Exxon
Precious metals: Goldcorp, Yamana, Silver Standard
    Others : BHP, Areva.
And big companies with large revenue streams outside of the US.

I see investing in non commodity companies as tricky, because their margins will thin due to inflation of input prices.

With your buying and selling of business' success, I should think you would stick with that. If the housing market is in a slump where you are as it is in the U.S. I would buy distressed properties preferably duplexes, 4 plexes etc, rental stuff with a current positive cash flow. If you can finance the majority of it buy more, once the economy turns up bingo, instant equity. Hire an apartment manager and head to the South of France for R and R. Or not.

Buy Gold!! Gold has gone up and has gone down, but you can always rely on it going up, unlike silver...
    1. beinki
Gold has seen a nice run up, in fact I'm ready to sell. Buying gold or siver now you would have a long wait to move another 30%. I am expected gold to flat line and then go lower as the markets turn around in the coming year. Silver however has a larger % used in manufacturing so That Might be a better bet near term.
    2. harveyavatar
Gold and silver are like a ball held under water. These are manipulated markets, but it can only last so long.

    buy gold or water

however, aren't you in the UK, doesn't it rain all the time?

or I'd even consider non perishable food, a horse, a shack in the hills with bore water, solar power set up and a decent vege patch... oh chickens, yeah lots of chickens, oh... and a dog... yep ... a pushbike

And no, I am not waiting for doomsday, I just the the world is changing
    1. inbusiness
Thanks mate - there are a few things to go on there - maybe the chickens, my daughter would love that!
    2. acousticguitarist
Although my comment seems ridiculous I'll explain.

As you would probably know, regardless of what manipulation is done to the financial market, gold is always a good thing to have around in times of economic confusion. Even though gold has been sold off by the Reserves and they now use invisible digits as the value behind currency, gold is useful.

Water is fast becoming the new gold, I don't know if it is in other parts of the world but if you have a water source you will be much better off in the future because it's going to get very expensive.

As for energy, well if you can create or gather your own source of energy and have alternative transport you are not dependent on the big machine.

So although my post sounds ludicrous, if you look at it carefully it's not that silly really.

But definitely get the chicken regardless, you need to make pancakes and better pick up a rooster as well to annoy the crap out of the neighbours. A neighbour near where i used to live had a really annoying rooster and it would go off at any time of day, I'm surprised it survived so long.

I'd go for micro investments and spread the portfolio - I don't mean the stock market I mean business startups - just look at the rise of online businesses like Twitter and Flickr for example. You really want to find people with great ideas and/or expertise who need a small amount to start up - sort of a mini-dragons den I suppose. Alternatively I'd agree with the green energy ideas, the returns are near guaranteed. £150k would get a wind turbine powerful enough to provide a small town of thousands, you can sell the excess back to the national grid, Scotland actually encourages it, same with Europe, England is difficult because of the legion of nimbys and strict planning permission. But I think micro investments are safer as you spread the risk. cheers Paul Baines paulbaines.co.uk

Thank you Paul for the idea - I like the ideas - I have posted the idea of a mini Dragons-Den on my blog here www.in-business.org.uk/2008/08/20/business-angels-needed-investors-in-busin... - SO would welcome other investors. I noticed that you had several recommendations to invest in Wind & solar. While these were "hot" sectors a couple of years ago - it is best to stay from them in the present economic climate. The price of listed Wind and Solar companies have collapsed as demand had died down, especially with oil prices back down from their recent highs. So not much prospect of a decent return in the near future.

I would invest in small social entrepauners had i that sort of cash, helping to make money by making a small difference to a small community.

like opening up youth centres, or getting grad level students helping out school children in their area of expertise, (giving short lectures about careers they are interested in) as this is what i am currently thinking of setting up as a business.

message me if you are interested to hear more about the business plan etc.

    Hi
If you are interested in medium to long term you can maybe buy a partnership in a game lodge in South Africa. Tourists from Europe and USA are flocking here and paying riduculous prices to be pampered.

With current ROE your Pounds 150 000.00 will be worth ± R1 800 000.00 (local currency)
    1. inbusiness
What could I get for R1,800,000.oo Stryger in SA? I did consider at one point setting up a range over there doing horse riding etc, as I love SA
    2. Stryger
If you are interested I could find out. I need to know what exactly you are interested in. I travel quite a lot in the area where there are a lot of game farms. Some people do horse riding and Xtreme adventures on their land without providing sleeping facilities, etc. They are situated close to private game reserves and arrange with these reserves to bring their guests for horse riding, etc. Costs much less to develop.
If you are interested you can pm me to get my email address and we can discuss it further.

Wind energy... Invest in windmill farms. Esp with Obama in office, the renewable energy fields are going to boom. And because of the drop in oil prices, it's cheap to get in on them now. Just cause something "looks collapsed" doesn't mean it won't come back. Which, it will, Strongly, I suspect.

It has been said that if you can manage to get 500 visitors to your website in a day, that would likely average out to about $10.00 in adsense clicks.

With that being said, let's suppose you have 100 sites. You would have to purchase domains, as it would be best to have your own hosting rather than to use free hosting from services such as blogspot. That would cost you about $1000.00 for domain names and about $14.00 a month for unlimited 'domain' hosting from Hostgator (the business package), which you would probably have to do an upgrade on at some point due to increased use of bandwidth.

Of course, it would be ideal for you to use a hosting service that allows you to create different IP addresses, as then you would be able to link your sites together in such a way as to incur backlink power, which would ultimately help you with your search engine placement, and thus draw more organic traffic to your blogs (free traffic). You would have to get a reseller hosting package to do this with Hostgator: www.hostgator.com/resellers.shtml

Then you have to find the right keywords to use to draw traffic; and you must have content to compliment those keywords, of course. Linking with the right anchor text would also prove to be very helpful here! A good keyword search tool is needed for this. You could use Wordtracker: www.wordtracker.com/ This will cost you about $300 a year. It's worth it though, as it is very powerful!

You could always outsource for content. But you should make sure you hire people to provide you with quality work. You will need about 50 articles per site (you only need to start off with about 5-10 articles per site however; and you would gradually add more and more content each week). You would have to follow a good internal linking structure however, which would also help you with search engine placement and indexing.

Now then, let's suppose you can manage all of this. It would likely average out to you incurring about $15,000 - $30,000 a month. But that's just adsense. You would make more as an affiliate marketer.

Of course, there are other things you can do that will greatly help you with this. But this gives you a general idea.

Note: it's not as easy as it sounds. It's hard work! Very hard work!

I know quite a bit about this stuff because I used to be an Internet Marketer. But I decided to devote my time to using my knowledge to share the gospel instead of trying to amass wealth and fortune for myself.

I am not making any money doing what I do online. However, I find great pleasure in it. I am happier now than I was when I was an Internet Marketer. My life isn't about me anymore. It's about Jesus Christ.
    1. inbusiness
If this is incurring me $15-30,000 per month then what income are you invisaging this making and from where? any examples, apart from Google adsense, which I do not think would give that high return
    2. chrisesty
It's hard for you to believe that Google would give you such a high return only because you are not seeing the big picture here.

The key is to see it in bulk, not in bits and pieces. If you see it as only a few sites then of course it would be hard for you to believe. But we aren't talking about a few sites here. We are talking about 100 sites that are potentially making you $10.00 each per day. When you do the math you can see that that can potentially amount to quite a large some of revenue per month.

Even if each site only made you $5.00 a day, which wouldn't be all that hard to do if a site has 30-50 SEO friendly pages, that would likely give you about $15,000 a month for 100 sites. Of course, as with any investment there is no guarantee. I hope you understand that.

When you have the money to work with things can go much faster for you, as you can outsource the work that needs to be done to put it all together. This will ligten your load of work significantly. Therefore, you are in a good spot to have such a large sum of money to invest. And yet, you wouldn't need nearly as much as you have!

Those who start out with little or nothing have a much harder time with this, as it takes a lot more time because they have to do all of the work themselves and can't afford to outsource. Of course, they don't have the means to use the tools/services that are necessary to achieve optimal success either (not initially).

Thus many get discouraged and give up; and then they tell everyone that it doesn't work. Yet, it does work. It just didn't work for them because they either didn't start out right or they gave up before giving it a REAL chance. Keep in mind that it could take you an entire year to set this up and reach a point wherein you would be able to manage it comfortably.

As for how much you need to invest, that is up to you. The model that I have given you would cost far less than what you have to build it. That's assuming that you would get the reseller package with Hostgator, use Wordtracker, purchase a good theme for Wordpress (I highly reccomend Thesis by Chris Pearson - the option that can be used on unlimited domains), purchase 100 domain names, and outsource for content (this is where your biggest expense would be).

Note: you can do a combination of creating your own content in an area where you are most knowledgeable and outsource in areas where you have limited knowledge. By doing this you will save a lot of money. Be careful however, not to build it too fast. That could work against you with Google. This is especially the case when obtaining backlinks to your site(s).

Again, it would be best to take your time with it. As with any investment you can't just throw all you've got into it from the beginning and reasonably expect a handsome return in a relatively short period of time. You have to grow your business right in order to succeed, which means you have to take it one step at a time rather than moving in 'leaps', so to speak.

But once you reach a certain point it will essentially incur a significant amount of revenue on a regular basis without you having to put much effort into it. And the money that you gain from it can be rolled over by investing in other projects.

But remember, this is just adsense. You would do far better as an affiliate marketer. Of course, you could do a combination of both. It would be entirely up to you.
    3. PetLvr
But once you reach a certain point it will essentially incur a significant amount of revenue on a regular basis without you having to put much effort into it. And the money that you gain from it can be rolled over by investing in other projects.

Despite the logistics and inaccuracies of Chris's calculations .. if you think the above statement is true - you shouldn't be involved with blogging.

Blogging is a long-term venture and takes a lot of effort. Ask anybody in thus forum. Or, ask anybody with a lot of sites versus someone with one site.

It is possible with a bunch of sites to get that exponential factor happening because it's easier to increase a little bit on a whole bunch of blogs than try to reach for the moon on a handful of blogs. However, if you ask anybody who has just a handful of blogs or one blogs, once you reach the moon there is a greater chance of longevity and other opportunities that may come your way.
    4. chrisesty
Who said he would have to blog? You should ask questions before jumping to conclusions.

Even though he would use a Wordpress theme, he would essentially set his pages up as static pages. Thus he would close comments. He would also use a silo approach in linking them together. This would help to maximize his placement in the SERPS and would also satisfy Google's interest in fresh content, as he would add one or two new pages to each website on a weekly basis.

This has nothing to do with overnight success. I already made it clear that he would have to work very hard to incur the revenue that I spoke of. Because he already has a lot of money to work with however, he is already ahead. So it won't be as difficult for him to succeed with this as it would be if he only had $1000.00 to work with.

Listen, I don't know why you are being so pessimistic about what I had said, but I have learned what I know from the best Internet Marketers online (people who are literally making millions of dollars doing Internet marketing, such as Brad Fallon and John Reese). In fact, I have Traffic Secrets 2.0 sitting right here, and I've already gone through Stomping the Search Engines. I've also gone through The SEO Book. So I am no novice to this stuff.

And even though you are trying to make it look like I don't know what I am talking about, you are sorely mistaken.

But you have a right to your opinion.
    5. chrisesty
      inbusiness,

I have given you an idea that will likely work for you if you work with it. But it is ultimately up to you what you will do with your money.

I will say this however: the world can't give you what Jesus can give you. It would be far better for you to give your money to the poor and follow Him. For, the world as we know it is passing away. But the gift that He has to offer will never fade away!

150 000$ to invest? You could buy a ad spot on my blog for 200 years..
    1. inbusiness
      That's actually £150,000 = $210,000 - but I do the deal at the $150,000 - now that was funny!
  43. justsaver
30% return is pretty high. 50% would be crazy. Most investors don't even beat the market continuously and even Madoff only promised 20% and that was during good times. High expectations eh?
    1. inbusiness
This sort of return can be found if you invest in the right thing - for example - I invested £22,500 2 years ago and this is now producing a return of £24,000 pa, which is more than 100% return, plus my investment is now worth in the region of over £100,000! So it can be done if you look in the right places

    2. a brand card game, with great incomes
    best wishes
    1. inbusiness
Not really interested in restaurants - maybe fast food take away I would do, and please expandon the card game thing - I was not sure whether this was a serious suggestion or not, R
    1. inbusiness
I will take a look at your site, just seen this, I am assuming there is more detail on this here
    2. inbusiness
@bcletourneau, just taken a look at this blog and it's not in English - so I am not sure whether this had any relevance - perhaps you could expand on this one, thank you

investment is never guarranteed to be sucessful, my suggestion is think of something no-one has yet thought of. look at poeple who need investment for they ideas and make sure that either you or the people behind the project are experts in that field, 30% to 50% is asking alot, dont think you will get that unless you have a long term plan. ONLY invest what you can afford to lose. or invest in my company....
    1. inbusiness
As I noted above my return criteria is realistic in my mind, thinking of something someonehas never thought of is not always easy and is fraught with high risk, of course if this comes off though the returns can be very high, which boils down to the "risk and return" formular. So not too keen on inventing smething brand new - but a new web concept might tempt me, if anyone wants to talk to me on this
  47. inbusiness
By the way - I am trying to respond to every one who has taken the time to comment on my discussion. Forgive me if I have missed your comment, whether it be serious or a bit of tongue and cheek, as all comments are welcome. If I have missed you please let me know by re-posting at the bottom of this discussion, thank you.

The funny ones I laugh at and and make my day brighter, whereas the serious suggestions will help to the aim of this discussion in the first place and you never know I might well get my investment from this source.

This is a serious suggestion by the way, just in case people thought that I might have just posted this for fun - so if anyone out there does have a good idea or an investment whereby I can help make somoone else money whilst making me more money then all the better!

So please keep the suggestions coming.

Just a thought, we have several really successful places here called A Dinner A'Fare, and it's a place where you can go in and make your own meals. Working moms can go in once a week, make up 2-4 meals for the next week from ingredients already laid out, and leave. They can refrigerate or freeze them. As a busy single working mom, I can tell you, these places are great.

You might find something similar in the UK to invest in, or contact the folks here about a franchise. www.dinnerafare.com/

[FYI - I don't work for Dinner A'fare, I just like to promote a good idea when I see it..]

@Scribblerchick, thank you, when I get a mo, I will check this out

How about the FREE Energy market. There are a plethora of free, yes free energy devices which are waiting for investment from good people like your good self.

Such devices include the whipmag device, GEET device, Joe Cell, Solar and wind power (yawn), solar cooking, and many more.

Just a thought, or you could invest in the 'norm' - internet-based investment, which is a saturated market to say the least.

If you choose the latter, the geo-tagging sites are the next big thing.
    1. inbusiness
@SolReka, please tell me more about the geo-tagging sites - that sounds interesting

Start a media production studio in some countries where GBP is low. Here in India it is 65. So it converts to 97lakhs which is more than enough to set up a media production house with best resources, work and infrastructure.

return on investment will be doubled if we have a good marketing team..

Shout if it make sense to you..
I can help you with that

Hi dude....seems like a bad idea to say you have so much money to invest
    1. inbusiness
Hi umikun - sorry missed your comment on this post - it's a good thing to have money to invest and especially right now in the present climate, as there are some deals to be done. Am working on a deal right now in the UK for exactly this sum, so really happy if the deal comes off, which will give me around 52% plus return! SO thank you for all those that gave input on this discussion.

addendum to my previous comment: technically the present solid V shaped rebound actually doesn't bode well for the stock market medium term. Could go up for a couple more months before heading even lower than initially anticipated. Just probabilities.
    1. inbusiness
I think the stock market will continue now on a steady rise, all be it with the usual ups and downs on the way (all in my own opinion of course)
  66. harveyavatar
The bottom of a bear market is usually characterized by many divergences between price and secondary indicators (breadth, momentum etc.). Something we are not seeing here. Never say never, of course. Commodities do look solid.
