It may be old news now but what do all think about Chicago losing out?

Mayor Daley has to deal with real issues now! Like what other public entities is he going to sell-out. Youth violence! Things of that nature!

We had two recent Olympics (Atlanta and Salt Lake City). I'm glad Rio got it because South America has never hosted one. I'm not against it being in Chicago, but just think Rio was a better choice at this time. And even though I'm not an Obama fan, I really do NOT think it was a shun against Obama, the U.S. or something political that made them choose Rio over Chicago.

For the best. Tons of other cities could use that kind of revenue...not that Chicago doesn't but I think it could go elsewhere.

I'm glad Chicago didn't get it since we get it so often. We don't need another reason for the world to hate us.

calais50 absolutely. I didn't even realise that Chicago was competing for the 1916 Games, but you have hit the nail on the head.

"..but what do all think about Chicago losing out?" implies an ownership of the Games that were somehow wrongly taken away from us. Chicago didn't lose out, for goodness sake. There were other cities that put forward much better options.

EVERY COMPETING CITY WANTS TO WIN!!!!!!! Every citizen in the universe hopes his/her city will be successful.

From what I gather, there was a feud between the International Olympic Committee and the American Olympic Committee, something to do with revenue sharing. As long as that goes on no American city will get the Olympics.

A lot of Olympic cities have struggled to pay the debts they incurred for a decade or more after they held the Olympics. The predictions of improving the local economy, when the promoters are selling their bill of goods, amount to something between a big lie and a slim chance. Chicago won, actually, they got all of the publicity of trying out for the Olympics, and escaped going bankrupt. Also, I think it is fine that South America gets its first chance to host the games. They are Americans, too, though my countrymen generally forget this.

"They are Americans, too, though my countrymen generally forget this."

      Merely a matter of semantics.

If there was any place to out-bid our city, I'm happy it's Rio. Nice weather, Carnivale and Olympics = most party ever.

I think Rio would do better to spend the money on building proper housing for its people and knocking down the Favelas than wasting money on a corporate jamboree.
