I'm wondering what third party commenting systems are out there and what your experience with them has been.

So far I know about three:

Haloscan www.haloscan.com
SezWho www.sezwho.com
Disqus www.disqus.com

Are there any others I should know about?

I'd like to comment on haloscan please. I have no experience with the other two. I find it very difficult to see so unless I can get someone else to tell me what letters and numbers are shown I can't leave comments.

Ah yes. I hate character recognition in general.

The one thing I like about Haloscan is its ease in setting up, and the fact that one can blog IP addresses or whole IP ranges.

The interesting thing about the other two is the threaded aspect, though I dislike the growing trend towards voting on comments.

I'm also a bit short sighted, its a neurological thing, and screws up my ability to actually work out what those weird anti-spam things are sometimes. Some are OK if they're based on just a font that's been slightly rotated, but the ones that introduce noice into the picture confuse the heck out of my brain. In those instances I just have to keep trying or not comment at all. I haven't reached the stage of needing to use a reader but I often have to increase my font size to double or triple what is normal.

I have installed commenting system from intensedebate.com and is ok for now. But, their old comment importer didn't imported all comments and those imported are also without the name of the commenter. I have contacted admin about this and they also don't know about this.

Same here. The rating thing doesn't bother me really.

In migrating a blog from Blogger to Wordpress (in-house) just over a year ago we had a nightmare of a time getting old comments out of Haloscan.

Plus you dont have a capcha and blogcatalog is slowly taking over the avatar thing compared with gravatars and mybloglog

I suppose even if there are other options out there, going with a popular one makes sense from the point of view of sustainability. Wouldn't want some place disappearing on me or not able to invest the resources necessary to maintain the software.

Large companies can have their problems as well.

True. It would be real nice if one of these places offered a commenting system that included a download option for a backup. I suppose, though, that one could create a backup via RSS.
