At the risk of being considered "unintelligent:"
* He was a "cowboy," in a positive sense. Perhaps because I grew up in a predominantly Scandinavian part of the culture, I don't expect as much overt hysteria from leaders as most Americans seem to. For that reason, I perceived that the current President Bush was moved and sincere about the 9/11 attack, even though he didn't speak with a cry in his voice. Also, around that time, he stated (sorry, I'd have to research for a quote: a paraphrase will have to do): 'We intend to find out who did this. And we will.'
* And now, for something completely different: His taste in pets. This is trivial, but I find that black dog endearing.
* Although his family is northeastern, he is by upbringing and choice a Texan. Someone I know said, "Nobody lives in Texas!" - in the way that another person might say, "Nobody likes country music." (Or bowling, or NASCAR.) It may be one of my faults that I enjoy seeing people I regard as snobs being driven to distraction by the success of a 'social inferior.'
* He has demonstrated resolve in pursuing a war which is popular neither with the upper crust of Washington, D.C., nor (if the polls are to be believed) the American populace as a whole. Whether or not he was correct in pursuing this course is something that will probably not be settled for years, if not decades. But, I think he deserves credit for not letting polls and the Washington cocktail circuit determine foreign policy.
* Despite a steady dribble of complaints that he is the embodiment of all ungrooviness, is responsible for the destruction of the rainforests, and caused global warming, and probably started the Maunder Minimum, he has not, to date, said anything like Nixon's 'you won't have Nixon to kick around any more,' or "I am not a crook."
There, I've branded myself as poor, uneducated, and easily led. I can live with that.
Good thread starter, by the way.-
That was a mildly convoluted sentence. I'll try re-posting it as a list:
"He has demonstrated resolve in pursuing a war which is popular- neither with the upper crust of Washington, D.C.,
- nor ... the American populace as a whole.
- Is not consistent with established liberal doctrine, as exemplified by many of the better sort residing in Washington, D.C.
- Is also not consistent with the opinion of the American people as a whole, as expressed in the results of polls
-
* Never actually killed anybody himself, just delegated.
* Never literally burned the original copy of the American Constitution
* Never invaded Iran, tho did invade Iraq and Afganistan
* Never actually nuked anything, tho tanks fire shells with uranium tips that cause birth defects in Iraqis
* Never actually shot strikers, just invoked Taft-Hartley -

1) I'd like to make a love sandwich with his daughters and be the meaty middle
2) I know I could destroy him in scrabble
3) I probably could beat him at a game of Risk
4) He likes baseball
5) I can't think of a fifth -
1) He'll be out of office soon
2) He'll be out of office soon
3) He'll be out of office soon
4) He'll be out of office soon
5) Commuted Henry Lee Lucas sentence from death row to life
His was the only death penalty case among the 153 that came across Bush's desk in his tenure as Texas Governor in which he intervened and commuted the death sentence.
So I guess he showed some compassion. -

manumartin, You should have just called this thread "Let's Bash Bush". From the looks of the comments here, even if someone did post 5 good things, the poster would more than likely verbally flogged. Although I really could care less if I get flogged, I'll post.
Here is one for you. He has protected America. Since 911, we have not been attacked.-
Boohoo. Bush has killed thousands, destroyed what vestiges of America remained from NAFTA and people aren't drooling with love and devotion.
No terrorist attacks? Of course not -- Al-Queda is a CIA-run false flag operation. Look at the evidence.

daniel23, Oh yeah, the old conspiracy therory... It amazes me how people talk about how stupid and inept our Government is, but then come up with these elaborate conspiracy theroies... If these wild ass stories had any truth, don't you think there would be Government people climbing out of the woodwork to provide actual facts and not some scheme drawn up by a bunch pissed off people just looking for a reason to bash America?

OK Rooster, here you go… But as I said, it won’t matter much to the ones who blindly hate the man… If the people who hate him so much, only spent a quarter of their energy reading about the good he has done, they may have a different opinion. Instead they drink their daily Bush Bashing kool-aid from places like moveon . org, the daily kos Michael Moore and other knuckleheads. So here are five quick ones for you...
1. 1.4 million men, women and children are alive today as a direct result of treatment received through his AIDS initiatives.
2. 32 million seniors are now receiving prescription drug benefits, including 10 million low-income seniors who get their meds almost free
3. There have been historic gains in African American and Hispanic students in math and reading because of his “No-Child Left Behind” efforts.
4. He signed into law the first national energy plan in more than a decade. The energy
bill makes an unprecedented commitment to energy conservation and efficiency by promoting smarter technology; helps make cleaner and more productive use of our existing energy resources; and helps diversify energy supply by promoting alternative and renewable energy sources.
5. He has consistently advocated the creation of a separate Palestinian state in an effort to bring peace to the Middle East.
I never said he was not without fault, but to say the man has done nothing good is totally asinine.

AmmoBob,
I listed five good things. You'll find them near the top of this thread.
It's nice to see that someone else is capable of noticing the stated purpose of a thread, and contribute.
Also, you're missing the point here. For many people, Bush is to blame, and that's that. It's a case of 'my mind's made up, don't confuse me with the facts.' I don't understand the hatred myself: I suspect it may have something to do with his distinctly Texan background.
Billy Carter's brother, Jimmy, had a similar problem, being a peanut farmer. But Jimmy C. had the saving grace of being a nice, moderately-acceptable sorta-liberal.
Remember Billy Carter? 'Billy Beer' Billy Carter? Colorful fellow.

AmmoBob,
I have a stone that I carry around that protects me from tigers. I haven't been attacked yet, ergo, it works. -
He has protected America. Since 911, we have not been attacked.
Have you noticed that our kids are attacked every day? 4,000 and counting.
He has protected nothing but his $ interest.-
As I said to manumartin, why start a thread that says list 5 good things.
You prove my point, so instead of listing something good, you attack him with another statistic you think is only his fault. Why not blame him for Global Warming or everything else wrong in the world? Oh wait, he has already been blamed for all of that... Sorry...
The hatred for Bush by some folks is so over powering, that regardless of any good he accomplished, it would never be recognized.

1. He made us realize better times are to come after he retires;
2. I heard, and this is subjective, he's a genuine and kind person;
3. He can relate to toddlers and up to second-graders because he speaks their language- this is mine, that's yours let's fight about it
4. he seems to value his family.
5. He still has his own teeth and hair. -
Good question. IMO he's the worst president of my life so far, but this makes me think of the good side.
1. His behavior in office has made many people pay attention to what is going on in Washington. Clinton produced a few titillating diversions, but many people saw the government as running "good enough" and had disengaged from the political process. GWB's policies, like them or hate them, has created an environment that is bringing out the political streak in people who normally wouldn't care or get involved.
2. He has promised a LOT of money for AIDS prevention and treatment in Africa. I'm not a fan of how he is going about it, but anything that keeps the issue in the news is something I like.
3. Increased port security. There is a lot to complain about in how port security, as a rule, has fallen to the wayside and by any standard we have a long ways to go before we are where we should be. However, we have more inspections and security measures at our ports than we did when GWB took office.
4. Prescription drug coverage for senior citizens. Now that the door is open, maybe the next president can actually reform this policy to allow direct negotiation with drug companies so the coverage can be more effective and cost us taxpayers less money.
5. In January of 2002 he signed Executive Order establishing the USA Freedom Corps. The site at www.usafreedomcorps.gov creates an easy place to find volunteer opportunities in your area. Volunteerism helps keep community strong and makes sure that people across economic levels are aware of whats going on in their own backyards. -
My Top 10 or so, (no particular order, but too many to keep it to 5)
Integrity
Inspiration in time of crisis
Relentless focus on keeping US safe
Restored dignity to the White House, post William Jefferson Clinton fiasco
Diversity of Cabinet appointments, most women, African-Americans, Hispanics in history.
Doing whats he believes is right in the face of overwhelming opposition in Iraq.
Removing a mass murdering dictator from power and giving him full legal rights despite Iraqi calls to just shoot him.
Bringing accountability into the public schools...even teaming with Ted Kennedy to get legislation passed
Developing strong relations in emerging Eastern European countries.
Standing-by traditional allies even when sorely provoked by their lack of support.
Not putting up with UN BS resolutions...by exercising strong veto
Restoring balance to the Supreme Court without dragging the US thru months of hearings.
Pushing thru legislation to increase miles per gallon in cars despite Detroit opposition.
Refusing to be bullied into economy-destroying global treaties which as written make no sense.
Demonstrating great leadership by willingness to stand by his staff when it was not expedient.
Overseeing a 6 year economic expansion, despite the negative impact of 911, which threw the US into a recession in 2001

I like the way his wife has handled herself through these turbulent years. So for me he certainly has good taste in women for a start.
-
1. He's going to be out of office soon
2. He's made some remarks that have left me, and the rest of the world, rofl
3. He had demonstrated that a lack of intelligence does not bar you from holding the highest office in the land
4. Nope that's it no 4 or 5 -
I am confused here... who Anti-Bush & who is not? I feel everybody here is anti bush. No strategy involved
-
In case my posts are difficult to understand, let me make this clear:
If I am not "pro-Bush," I am emphatically not "anti-Bush." I do not regard him as a sort of New Age antichrist, spreading death and destruction.
I recognize that loathing President Bush is a requirement for entry into some of the better social circles, and that simply everyone who is anyone just hates him. But, as I've said quite often in the last few days, I can live with that.
-
-
Sylvia, there are members here in BC who are from other countries too.. so at least I have not voted him. hee.heeee..hee
-
Norski,
I don't believe that many people hate Bush simply to be accepted into various social groups. Do you really think it's stretch to think that many people genuinely loathe the individual for what he has done and what he represents?-
Sports,
I think his point was more along the line of just following the crowd. Most of the people here who have posted seem to know very little about Bush or what he has accomplished. Anyone who is not living in Oz, would know the man has accomplished some very good things during his time. I'm not saying he has not made mistakes. However, to only focus on the bad and not give credit to the good proves too many people here drink the same Kool-aid and are not very well informed.
Besides, the thread was "5 Things you like about George W. Bush" not lets all come together and Bash Bush. So simply reading the purpose of the tread seems to be difficult for some people, how could they discuss matters of the Presidency?
