Why are people so proud of their alexa rank, It means nothing!
It only gathers data when someone with the Alexa toolbar visits your site. Only about 3% of the worlds internet users actually have the toolbar installed. In most peoples eyes the Alexa toolbar is still classed as spam as it tracks and monitors every site you visit.
Even though my rank is 130,583 it still doesn't mean anything, Out of the 12,000 Visitors I get each day, Probably only 10 - 15 have the toolbar installed.
Just thought you should know -
This is a very interesting discussion. I recently added the widget to my blog and started writing some articles about Alexa, including ways to increase your Alexa rank. The truth is that Alexa is very flawed. Here are only 3 of the major issues (there are many more issues) -
The toolbar is not available for Internet Explorer & Windows Vista users. There are a lot of them around. This means that it can't track any of the sites someone with Vista and IE visit.
It doesn't count traffic from certain countries.
Your rankings can change by having the toolbar installed on your own system and consistently visiting your own site.
The problem is that there are certain companies that use Alexa in their algorithms to determine how much you should earn for placing their advertising on your blog. I think that Alexa will change in the future because it has to, however, it doesn't hurt you if you try to increase your rank now. Take a look at a few articles I wrote about it.

The truth is that Alexa is completely inaccurate, but the data is being used by some.-
I need to investigate what countries do not use the Alexa Toolbar. That's worthy of an article.
Also, asking Alexa to change it's business model (like adding tracking code), would result in their Toolbar becoming obsolete.
Source Blogger has hit the one million mark in Alexa in just 5 short weeks.
Come see why.

Thanks for sharing that point Dzrbenson and congratulations to you Rani.
Eum I am really clueless how this Alexa rank works. As far as I know it's only good for Payperpost and the likes.
Since my blog's birth last Feb 14 of this year, from 123123123123123123 rank or so now it's down to 233,000++ and this week it's averaging 100,000++. Not sure if numbers mean a thing. Probably experts can help us out with more detailed explanations. I'm sure there are tons of it here in BC.
Oh just in case you can look at my site at marcdionisio.blogspot.com -
I was at 70000 at Links.com at one time, but it was too difficult to keep it without constantly looking for new ways to attract and keep those Alexa toolbar users (e.g. webmasters), so I said what the heck. Mostly, I focus on the real traffic I get at my site, via Google Analytics.

The Alexa is really crazy for many sites. It prefers site about webdesign, Apple and other related stuff as the readers usually have the toolbar installed. For business oriented sites, it can be disappointing as the number of readers and Alexa Rank are not relevant.
