Just came across Matt Mullenweg's Wordpress post and he has compiled easy steps in how people easily kill their community online. This not only refers to individual blogs to forums in general I think. I think this is a very helpful insight in maintaining a healthy environment online here and everywhere. Please read along.

I thought you meant non-virtual communities... like neighborhoods, societal units etc, in which case i was going to say "build a bizarrely incentifized highway building program"

      I said please
    2. dbowles1017
That's like saying, "Can I please stab you?" No, just because you said please doesn't mean I agree
    3. celticmusicfan
I don't want to stab you Anyway I know you like giving orders so .....
    4. dbowles1017
Asking me to read is basically asking me if you can stab me.
    5. celticmusicfan
No it's good for your health believe me * more cookies on the counter await you *
    6. dbowles1017

  4. jeremyjanson
Yeah, all those are definite killers. I would also say "leave blog 110% overserious."
  5. celticmusicfan
thanks jeremy. and thanks for seeing my point. I'd say Agit8r's pic is a good banner for this.

Thanks Deray. And thanks a lot to dbowles for keeping this thread afloat
  7. Jaybetee
Thanks for sharing that. Well written and informative stuff.
    1. celticmusicfan
Thanks jaybetee. I'm just stepping out of my hat for some serious stuff this time
  8. boytrotters
That was entertaining, wasn't it? I have often wondered about the effectiveness of some of those tactics, especially the whole being controversial stuff.
    1. celticmusicfan
People use ninja, kick boxing or karate tactics. Others use coersion, others use the role of seduction...but nothing beats honesty in the end.
    2. boytrotters
I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with that.
  9. jonyx
That was entertaining! I'm guilty of the offensive content thing. Although ideally, I try and insinuate that you can leave whatever comment you want but if you're going to scream, curse bah bah at least do it legibly! And fully cap locked comments are just a nuisance bah.

I swear I am not a control freak heh =P

Don't worry. We are lla guilty especially whenh we have strong feelings about something. But I also want to point out, no matter what we say, as long as we have it edited then it is excusable.
  10. BeamingBalance
Very insightful. (Checking my blog for signs of "Nascar-ness.)

I believe that truth outweighs all else.

    Thanks CMF for this list!

It was amusing and truthful at the same time.

Good read, I'm going now to start a new forum.

Man, this really stayed alive for a long time! I got a kick out of everything on there, especially the NASCAR analogy. Also, I never understood why so many pingbacks and trackbacks and messy 'content' that isn't actually relevant to a site would end up in the comments. It's less common than it seemed to be a year ago, but I still don't understand why it's even an option.

I'm a big fan of clean and simple designs, and I think you're dead-on.

I think this was a great read. As I'm a subscriber I had read it prior to you posting this thread but I think all bloggers should take note of what Matt articulates.
