I started a blog, called Appetite for Equal Rights, dedicated to bringing you news stories and current events about women and gender equality. I want to help people stay up-to-date about these issues, as well as provide a forum to discuss them. I would love some feedback. Also, if you have a blog that explores similar issues, feel free to message me, and I might link your blog to mine

I see there are some students on this thread, which is a good thing in my opinion. These days when I ask my history students who considers themselves a feminist, I get very few positive responses. If I break it down into how they feel about key issues and rights, though, it seems that they are feminists. Of course there are varieties of feminism. Mine is pretty basic: feminists believe women are also people and should enjoy the same rights and opportunities as men.

You're right, Mark. There are in my opinion two strains of feminism - the type you mention (women fighting to be seen not just as equals - but also seen in a light that their contribution to society is equal and valuable to that of men, regardless of what their "position" in life is).
The other type is the one that gives feminists a bad name

I completely agree. Too often, there is a negative connotation attached to "feminism" and people are reluctant to identify with it. It's unfortunate because if all the stereotypes were abolished, a lot more people would start calling themselves feminists. Moreover, many men don't want to identify as feminists, although they believe in equal rights and opportunities. I had a male professor at my college who labeled himself as a proud feminist, and I thought that was really great.

Amy, don't you think, though, that people who self-identify as feminists (rightly or wrongly) are largely responsible for those stereotypes? One incident that stands out in my mind is that when I was in law school, the campus feminist group had an annual day on which they banned men from the quad. Of course, they had no means of enforcement and there were classroom and campus office buildings around the quad, so some men chose to or had to walk through--and were very much abused for it.
I probably wouldn't ever have identified myself as a feminist, but because I was a female law student and then lawyer involved in a number of women's issues I was often referred to as one...and that memory made me quickly and clearly disassociate myself.

Why not a blog on feminism and gender equality?
Remember, if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day.
If you teach a man to fish he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day. -
