One of my college professors had us type creative peices with our computer screens turned off.

I noticed it helped keep my mind where it should be, on content, instead of getting caught up on whatever I was seeing on the screen.

Yesterday, I found this: www.darkcopy.com

DarkCopy is a simple, full-screen text editor for distraction free writing.
DarkCopy is for anyone who enjoys the simplicity of a typewriter, and wants to increase productivity by focusing only on writing.

It's pretty fabulous, as the dark, simple background is rather soothing.

What do you think?

I'm visually challenged and it's black with low contrast fonts.

I don't get it... can't I just open up notepad on my computer if I wanted something generic to type in. Not only that but make notepad full screen so it takes up my whole screen and I wouldn't "see" anything else.

yeah I hear the "notepad" comment a lot. I guess with DarkCopy, you either love it or hate it. I like the darkness. Notepad is a little blah for me, I just feel blank.

but DarkCopy is different for some reason.

      eh.

yeah, I think you are right it's either a love or hate. There really isn't much room for anything else

I like the dark look of it, too, as well as the fullscreen mode. Too bad it's an online thing (although one could save the page, I guess).

Here's a similar one, offline and cross-platform (requires Java):

Just for good measure, a list of full-screen editors:
