I got an email from a friend in the States containing a letter supposedly written by someone who has known Sarah Palin for more than fifteen years. I checked with Snopes.com and guess what? The letter is legit! So, I published it on my blog for those who are interested in what at least one citizen of her home town thinks of her (it ain't pretty!)

What an email.............. I think she should have run for president.
Are they all like that up in Alaska
-
Have a look at the Mud Flats Blog to find of what real Alaskans think of Palin

Is this the letter that says that the recipients are welcome to forward to their friends and email lists, but she does not want it published on a website?

Women Against Sarah Palin Speak Out
"Two women in New York felt so strongly that Palin was the wrong choice they created a blog called "Women Against Sarah Palin" and are using the site to post emails from women who write in from all over the country about why they think Palin is the wrong choice as for Vice President and the wrong choice for American women."

I had already read the letter on another blog (where? I can't remember) but I'm glad you took the time to check out snopes to see if it was for real or not.
It's no surprise to me that "popularity" of a politician numbers wise and true feelings of the constituents don't match up.
This is true in any town, even more so in a small town.-
I am very "truth" oriented (and the smear campaign against Kerry really ticked me off) so I am very careful to check this sort of thing out. If Snopes hadn't already seen it, I was planning to send it to them for verification before I put it on my blog.
The writer was very straight-forward and didn't use inflammatory language, so this had the ring of legitimacy to it, but I didn't want to take any chances.

Interesting. This letter contains absolutely none of those precious "sources" that most of you insist upon when we Republicans make claims against your Obamessiah, but if some random person wants to make claims against Palin without sources, you lap them up like a thirsty dog. Nice.
The writer herself admits that Sarah is very popular in Wasilla. If she's so terrible, why is she so popular? The writer also says that she and Sarah have been on the outs since '96. Hmmmm...can you say "vendetta"?-
Kristi, small town politics comes with a double edged sword. They operate differently than politics in large cities, and on a national level.
Many of our small town politicians are "well liked" on paper and in public, but are privately despised. And my "small town" is much, much larger than Wassilla.
Backstabbing, private "takeovers" and "overhauls" as well as party information swapping is common. But on paper, it's all praise - as those who dissent are often left on the outskirts and are easily "blackballed" from political affairs and decision making processes.
Some (here) have even been run out of town.
I find it interesting that first hand knowledge is shrugged off.
Edit: Kristi, you can check the financial numbers and sources for the reasons she is disliked on reputable news and information sources.
Seeing as this is a first-hand account, sources and citations are generally not required. -
@kristi
There are people plenty of people who hate Obama and are scared to death of him...and have legitimate reasons.
Please cite your sources for this alleged "fear" and the alleged "legitimate reasons". All I've been able to find so far is outright lies and ridiculous exaggerations and speculations. -
TT, I don't have time. I'm supposed to be working right now. But my goodness...all you have to do is turn on the news, read blogs, etc., to see that many people (including myself, my family, and just about everyone I know personally) can't stand Obama and are scared of the man.
And if you haven't seen legitimate reasons, it's because you don't want to see them. -
I have read the paranoid bullcrap in the right wing republican blogs written by paranoid bigots and racists. I have also read and viewed all the despicable bullcrap that the McCain campaign has shoveled.
Once again I ask you to cite your sources for this alleged Obama "fear" and the alleged "legitimate reasons" for being "scared to death of him" . All I've been able to find so far is outright lies and ridiculous exaggerations and speculations.
Obama issues economics www.barackobama.com/issues/economy/ -
The economic aspect is already well documented. In fact, there are numerous threads with more than a few links on the general board, and political board alike that confirm what she is saying in the letter.
If you are trying to say that a local person in a small town doesn't know the town's economic problems, issues, and resolutions you are very mistaken. -
When Palin left office in 2002, Wasilla had racked up nearly $20 million in long-term debt, or roughly $3,000 of debt for every resident.
But Palin’s approach actually brings her in line with McCain, whose own massive tax cuts would recklessly exacerbate the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush Administration and potentially cause the largest deficit in 25 years.

The only reason you and your family and others are afraid of Obama, "Is because he is smarter than you. He can't help that he was born that way." Taken in part, from Bill Mahr.
One more thing ... Obama has the good council of the Clintons, Gores and Bidens.
All McCain and Palin have is the example of Bush and Cheney. Heck! They didn't even bother to show up at RNC. That speaks volumes! -
If someone who has known Obama for 15 years in such a microcosm as small town politics were to write something like this, I would pay close attention to it. First hand accounts do not require citations...indeed, they are impossible to provide. And this woman's letter is about a great deal more than economics.
You may question her motives, but a lot of what she says here I've already read on news sites...the librarian thing, the firings, the vendetta against the ex-BIL, the city debt. Why not reread this with some objectivity and the idea that if this woman is telling the truth, Palin is scary...then randomly pick some of Kilkenny's statements and independently verify them yourself.
May I ask...if someone were able to provide verification to half or more of the statements in this letter, would you be willing to view her as a candidate so alarming that you would not vote for her and McCain? Or would you vote for her no matter what was said and proven?
-
I don't agree with a lot of Palin's positions but I admire what she has accomplished. I withhold final judgement until more is known.

@scribblerchick
There's a great deal of information available. Please post the accomplishments that you believe Palin has achieved and cite the sources for your position. If you check out the BC political forum you will find many links have been posted to research done on Palin's so-called accomplishments that they are not praise worthy.

This NYT article conveys much the same impression as this letter, and it's sourced: www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?_r=1&th&emc=th&oref=slo...

That is what impressed me about this--the ring of truth. No inflammatory or biased language, no conspiracy theories, no ridiculous claims, no subterfuge...just some plain writing by someone who has known Palin for more than 15 years.
But just to make sure it wasn't a hoax, I verified the source through Snopes.com. This author is a real person, she is exactly who she says she is, and she confirmed to Snopes that she did write this letter.

Hot damn! Reading this letter was an enlightenment. This woman is even more effective than I thought she was. Nobody can step on so many toes, yet retain such a phenomenal ranking of popularity, and be all bad.

The Ed Schultz Show today, 1260 AM was airing from Alaska and I do believe it was in regard to this rally. I listened i the car but when I got inside the reception was not very good, so I missed a major portion of the show.

Snopes is a great source for information.
It's amazing what they find is actually TRUE...read the article on this link:
www.snopes.com/lost/mistered.asp?version=color#toggle
At the bottom check out/click on 'More information on this page'
It's an eye opening article about truth. -
Sweetie, try this: State in your comments that you have inside information on Palin. Ask people to write with their email address so you can send it to them. See what happens. I predict you will have hundreds of people who write and do not care what your credentials are. People just don't care about truth. They want dirt. It's like the gossip witch on the street who claims to know about the gorgeous blond who just moved into the big house on the corner. The witch always has the entire neighborhood glued to her words. It's like tabloid newspapers that are cash cows for their owners.
-
I am not sure what you are taking issue with here.
The letter is from someone who has known Palin for more than 15 years. A substantial portion of the information is independently verifiable...indeed, much of it (librarian, ex-BIL, mass firings, city debt) has been reported on news sites prior to this letter surfacing. The rest of the information is observations from a person who actually knows her. Isn't that better info that a lot of hot air from people who are speculating about her?
If you are referring to my choosing Shameless Blog Promotion as a venue for this post, be aware that it was done so that I could "link drop" with impunity. My blog is little, it is low traffic, and I don't care.

Errr, uhmm, may I point you towards this place on BC? www.blogcatalog.com/politics/discuss
Or if you'd prefer not to, here are some well-researched stories from Sunday from the New York Times and Washington Post:
www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?ex=1379131200&en=dd4449...
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/13/AR2008091302596.ht...
Funny thing is, I suspect some of us will find confirmation of our worst fears, and others will find reason to cheer the woman. Either way, it's more research, which is never bad.
And for those of you who want to imagine a worst case scenario, here's one from a NYT op-ed piece yesterday: www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/opinion/14rich.html?ex=1379044800&en=15674f5dc9a... Happy nightmares.

The issue is clear. For Sweetie and all the willing believers: You are fair people. That is also clear. Accordingly, you are busy trying to find people (detractors, only qualification is they knew the candidate 15 years ago) to comment on the other candidates and you are publicizing these negative "truths".
-
Interesting. A person who willingly and openly comments on the qualifications, (already) substantiated and disclosed history/records/work ethics who knows about it first hand, and takes her opinion and makes it public equals...believers actively looking for distractions?
Hmmm. SOmehow, I'm thinking there wasn't a lot of digging done for this e mail, for one.
Two, "negative truths" about a candidate are an unfortunate side effect of running for the second highest office in the country. Her record will be looked at. And her record is a matter of truth, and yes, much of it is negative.
This is not the voters creation
-
I was under the impression it was illegal to forward an email to someone else without permission. And to publish it, is there an issue here?
-
With regard to this particular mail, it seems there are multiple stories about it. Some say she encouraged people to mail it to family and friends but not put on a site, others claim to have seen it at multiple sites already.
I think at this time the point is moot, but if Ms. Kilkenny contacts me and asks me to remove it from my blog, I will be happy to comply.
-
-
-
Don't need 'em, as they have been in the political spotlight long enough for voters to know whose who.
They have also been part of politics in large cities - where their records are well known by large groups of people with large publications and newspaper...
Palin is the unknown from a small town where news doesn't exactly travel - so first hand knowledge like this would not only be common, but necessary because of the lack of actual history, records or works to go on other than the large things we've already read about.
