What do you do with pingbacks? Do you approve it or delete it?

I received one today. I am a bit confused. What is the difference between pingback and incoming links, if both come from other sources?

I associate "pingbacks" with networking and blog sites like technorati. I could be wrong, however they usually involve bots and crawlers that look for new content (either automatically or manually) so your feed can be updated on said networking sites.

"Linkbacks" or the links at the end of your blog post show you, and your readers which blogs have linked to your post. This counts, I believe, as incoming links which can lead to higher page ranks and better indexing.

It means that someone pinged your blog, or in layman's terms, they linked to you and they're letting you know. It's not prone to spam and abuse - trackbacks are generally worse for that kind of thing - but it does happen occasionally.

Normally, you'll receive notification of other blogs that link to you. Since pingbacks are native to most blogs, you'll only get updates from blogs with pingbacks. But if the site you received the pingback from hasn't linked to you, then that means they're an attention seeker. Moar info on pingbacks here:

So if I approve the pingback, I am actually exchanging links to a specific post. Does that help with page rank or what does approving pingback do?

I really have no idea what approving them does for your page rank. Then again, I don't care about page ranking and all that superficial toss. But yeah, if site B links to site A and both sites have pingback options, site A would be notified.

I checked them out on this site

      www.checkpagerank.net/

They do not have any page rank. One looks professional site but no valid domain age.

      And further discussions on wordpress:

"There are also nifty ways for authors of other blogs to leave comments without even visiting the blog! Called "pingbacks" or "trackbacks", they can inform other bloggers whenever they cite an article from another site in their own articles. All this ensures that online conversations can be maintained painlessly among various site users and websites. "

Taking all these into consideration, I will not let it through. Unless I know it comes for reliable sourcs we know like yourself @qelqoth and @anok.

      This is futher discussed here.

      and other forums.

      Thanks for your help.

My definition: A ping is an electronic message program sent by one computer to another that notifies the receiving computer that a package of information is ready to be picked up.

A more official definition: Ping is a fundamental program that allows a computer to send a request to another computer somewhere else on the network or on the Internet in order to determine if the computer exists and is responding.

Pinging is also been used to determine the latency, or how long it takes data to travel across the various internet connections and nodes to reach the computer on the other side. This data is then calculated to determine how fast the connection is to the other computer and how quickly a particular data transfer can be completed.

A "ping" sends a packet of data to a specific address and waits for an appropriately named "pong" response. The ping name actually was not derived from table tennis, but was devised from the sound that submarine sonar makes when it bounces off physical objects.

Pingbacks: As quelqoth says above they are notifications that someone has linked to your posts. Some spmmers send pingbacks simply so they can get their links on to your blog in the comment section so be careful when you moderate them. As there is a lot of pingback spam, check to see if sploggers have linked to your posts. I check out each and everyone before I choose whether or not to post them.

@timethief. What would be your criteria for posting pingbacks?

      Page rank
      Validity of domain
      Alexa
      Or you know the blogger?

      Appreciate your comment.

They all go into moderation along with the comments and I check every one. If I have any apprehension at all I do NOT post the pingback.

I can check a site a tell whether or not it's a splog.

If you are concerned that you may have posted a pingback spam then run your own site through the bad neighborhood checker and see what you turn up.
