i am just wondering why there are not more comments posted to the blog itself... whereas,,, i appreciate the whole community thing going on here,,, i would be happier if i knew people were reading and commenting on my blog, rather than my good sense to join and showcase my blog here......

The comments in blogcatalog are kind of like an icing on the cake but I dont see them competing with the commenting section on peoples posts. Every now and then someone will comment on my blog but its not as common as the actual comments I get to posts. From what I can tell blogcatalog users tend to use the shoutbox more than the comments sections on the blogpages themselves.

Your'e right, we actually should write more comments in the blogs themselves and not just in BlogCatalog.
Its important for us blog owners that people react to our writings and offer their view on different topics on th blogs themselves.
Take care,

It seems to me that people should comment on and respond to the things that inspire a response in them, and to which they wish to respond, without regard to which forum those things arise in. Commenting on blog posts as an assignment or social obligation will only lead to an increase in meaningless comments intended more to meet expectations or trade favors than to engage in any actual meaningful discussion.

Well, a comment if intended to be useful/constructive is valid no matter where it's placed. You can fairly well tell someone has or hasn't read your blog by what's said.
I think that placing a comment on BlogCatalog IS unfortuantely easier for those folks who have no intention of reading and only want attention personally.
But I wouldn't say that's to the complete exclusion of good comments.
I'd say the only benefits to having the comments all on the blog themselves if if a blogger was leveraging comments more to stimulate discussion directly ON the blog, or to say, "Hey, look at all the visitors I have." -
From what I can see in the brief time I have been blogging is that it is easy to become stretched to thin and lose some of the enjoyment of doing it. I dont't want to trade links. If someone asks me about that I wonder if they actually want to know me or my blog. Maybe they do but why not just start with that? I don't know. Im trying to figure it out.

Paisley, this is the best place that I've found to get people to at least look at my blog; see if it may be of interest to them. I only want people who are truly interested to comment. There are so many blogs that if this "showcase" didn't exist it would be a lot harder for me to learn about many of them.

I am weird about how I comment, I only comment 1. If I find it interesting 2. If I have learned something 3. I feel that I can add something constructive to it. A lot of blogs that I have read I do not agree with, therefore I just don't comment. I don't think the friends thing has much to do with it, people add me and I know they haven't checked out the blog, and I'm okay with that. Same for me, if I like someone's views in a discussion board I may add them just to follow their threads. I check out everyone's blog at least once, weather I comment or comeback has little to do with the blogger and more to do with the topic and "would this comment be beneficial to this post". I'm pretty opinionated so it's usually more often than not. Though I do subscribe to 23 BC blogs, so I like quite a few, I just feel that I would rather have genuine comments on something that compels or moves someone, than a bunch of spam or "True dats"

I would agree to that in a forum, however I have noted that many cannot deal with differences of opinions and then it turns into a comment war. I actually offered an opinion on a blog last week, they responded by saying "You're just a typical white b*tch to afraid of a brother now get in the kitchen and make me a sandwich" and while I have to admit I found his ignorance and sexism amusing, it taught me that a person's blog is there space and to put a ripple in their space can cause some nasty aftershocks. As if his little comment wasn't enough he had some friends click back to me and talk trash on my blog, so after cussing them out individually it is safe to say what sounds like good logic (offering opinions), is only good if logical people are involved. Not saying that there are not a lot of them (logical folks) but I sure as heck am not sifting through

Why should people comment on your blog unless you make it interesting enough for them to go from blogcatalog to your personal blog. There are a lot of blogs to choose from here. I have not received a huge amount of traffic from Blogcatalog. It has been steady, but not huge. Make your posts interesting here and people will look at your blog.
