How do you index a site on google anyway? (Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm not really the most technological minded).

Do you mean other than wait for Google to find it? You can submit it here: www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

they would even take longer I think

there's a lot of other ways

Besides submitting your site to Google I would also suggest that you get a Google Webmasters account, verify your blog and submit a site map.

    www.xml-sitemaps.com/

MSN will seldom visit a website unless invited by submission.

Yahoo frequents sites more than MSN but less than Google but will dramatically increase visits after submission.

Claim your blog at Technorati. Register and create an account, claim your blog(s), tag them, and register your favorite blogs. You will find that the site has excellent instructions to help you work through all the steps.

I agree these are all really valuable places to have your site. If you can, the google analytics is priceless. I'm not sure if free places like Wordpress.com allow you to monitor that though/ add this code.

That's why I can't stress enough how important it is to have a real domain and a real host... meaning one that doesn't limit you. I mean come on, it's a few bucks a month

And I have noticed BlogCatalog Plays a major role in improving Google index and increasing Page Ranks. Blogcatalog always give good links back to your blog.

    What do you think?
    1. Lpe04
The page that links to your blogs on BC is "nofollow"

Alternative, you can social bookmarking, digg it and add your blog as signature in popular webmaster forums.

      @roger420
IMO joining social bookmarking sites and using the buttons on your posts is NOT an alternative for registering with search engines, getting a Google webmaster's account and creating and submitting a sitemap. IMO social bookmarking ought to be viewed as additional to search engine registration.

Step by step instructions for search engine registration can be found in this post found in the BC New Users Group

      You're welcome

I'd like to emphasize the importance of creating and submitting an XML sitemap. With a sitemap you are making Google's job of crawling your site much easier. If you want to get a deep crawl of your site then make sure you have a site map. www.xml-sitemaps.com/

The best way for any search engine to find your site is through a backlink or backlinks. When you submit your site to google it will be crawled, however this does not guarantee it being indexed.

However when the crawlers find your site via inbound links you are 90% more likely to be indexed.

Getting indexed on targeted keywords is a completely different story and a ton more work is needed.

I used link bulding to get indexed and was on yahoo, google, ask and msn wiithin 3 weeks of registering my domain, no time to wait months

How to make your Blog visible for Searh Engines? I checked a lot of Blogs in our community and to my great surprise they doesn’t have Meta tags, descriptions, keywords visible for Search Engines! Look here online-income-opportunities-vorsta.blogspot.com/2009/02/meta-tags-are-ident...

I have always understood that is is bad SEO to self-submit URL through Google. Rather let robots index your site. I may be wrong though.

Also, there are loads of free web directories out there to submit your blog and sites to - I am too lazy to do this myself and pay a company to do it for me, but if you have time this will generate traffic and help with search rankings
    1. acousticguitarist
no it doesn't make any difference, in 1999 it did

i am not clear this topic
