I'm Curious as to why everyone does this?
It seems from reading around here that to make even a lousy hundred dollars from adsense could take upwards of a year-- why does everybody even bother to do it???
To have ugly ads on your site for no money?
Am I missing something?

Since the ads are targeted, the products and services listed may be helpful to my readers and I try to put the ads in unobtrusive spots so as not to annoy readers. I have clicked on ads on other people's blogs that sounded useful so I assume others may find the sites listed beneficial.
I suppose I could just compile a list of links related to each post and tack them on to the end since I have long been resigned to never get enough from AdSense to receive a check.

Yes. You are missing two facts.
1) your ads don't have to be ugly on your site.
2) people do make money with ads - but ads don't have to be just adsense .. there are many options out there.
Think of it this way - let's assume two great blogs - each with great content.
(a) Let's say in the first case, you can have a lot of loyal readers, people who comment on your blog all the time, subscribe to your RSS feeds, bookmark your URL, even tell friends or link your page in their blogs etc etc etc.
In the first case, banner ads, recommendations and the like will probably do better than anything else because people respect the author, the blog and the community and willing to take it at face value that this blog recommends that product or site.
(b) Let's say in the second case, there are not many loyal readers, no comments, and many backlinks - but, when people search for interesting information in the search engines - the site comes up because it is search engine optimized.
In this second case, although it is very SEO friendly, as you know - not always will the best content appear at the top of the search engine and the site may be optimized more with some keywords and less with others. As such, people may search for your site and realize that this is not what they are looking for. In that case, the person searching for information will continue to search. So, ads on this blog that will do well are the adsense blogs, based on the content, to display relevant ads for similar sites that may help the reader continue with the quest to find that information. And, if they are going to click on ads anyway - why not get a piece of the action?
Both blogs with great content can probably do good with all types of ads .. but sometimes the reader just react to them oppositely. People looking for specific information might get intimidated with the closeness and intimacy of blogs with the readers (it's distracting) and other people looking to be intimate with the author and its content, and fellow readers might get intimidated with the seeing of all the ads (it's distracting).
I don't know if that helped or made any sense to anybody else but me. -
I used to feel that Adsense was also a waste. I had a blog that that had adsense and believe me I was not going to get to $100 for a few years.
But my new blog is doing great with adsense. I will probably get to $100 before the first 60 days.
I think it has to do a lot with the type of blog you have. If you blog about things that are just a distraction for people then adsense won't help. If you blog about things that people need then adsense will do good if you have the proper strategy.
The one thing you have to keep in mind....adsense makes you money without you doing any extra work...your going to blog anyway.-
@PetLvr It would be quite good. I will try to remember to let you know if that actually happens. Some days it looks like it will...other days it doesn't.
I am still learning about adsense...especially now that I have found out you can almost predict how much you will make per click depending on the keyword...That can make a big difference
Just for the record...I am up to $43.62 and the potato recipe blog has had adsense on it for about 45 days. So maybe I was being a bit optimistic when I said 60 days. Perhaps 90 days. But I would still consider that pretty good if it happens.
