Alexa : How do you rank?

How long did it take for alexa to start tracking your blog? Are the numbers actually helpful?

My daughter and I started Vnertia on April 25th and this is what alexa shows:

April 25: 19,838,717

I am at about 2.6 million I started at about 16 Million. I don't know if it means much. I haven't a clue how they would know how much traffic I have since I haven't submitted my blog to them.

All you have to do is install an alexa search bar on your browser and go to and hang around your site alot - and it will increase the numbers. I do not know what if anything those numbers really mean. I always thought it was a derivative of the Alexa tool bar...

I find the numbers helpful in that I can get a very general and rough idea of how popular a blog is that I visit. Then I can decide whether to find something worth commenting on, finding something worth linking over to, etc.
