Am I Being Rude?
Posted by suburbqueen • 2/24/08 • Subscribe to this Discussion [RSS] • Report This Topic
I've noticed more and more people respond to comments within their own blog. I never do this. Instead, I usually visit the blog owner to leave a comment on one of their posts. Am I being rude by not responding to comments on my own blog?

I usually do, mostly because I don't get that many comments on my blog. Or, if the person's comment asks questions or provokes thought or I just feel like replying, I will. For example, there's a pretty entertaining comment thread from me and Anok on one of my posts discussing the use of demi pointes related to foot flexibility and World War 2.

Depends on whether the comments need a response. It is normal to offer some replies to comments on your own blog, but only if you have something to say.

Rude is calling you a rotten bowl of rambunctious toad tumours, which I am not
On certain posts I will reply to comments on my blog, other times I hunt someone out and comment on theirs. It depends what the comment was. -
I seem to go in streaks when it comes to replying to comments. I've developed a few dedicated trolls in one of my blogs and I went to comment moderation and that seemed to get them riled up even more to simply fill my email with nonsense. Tis very sad... or something.

Well... I have always responded to comments, it creates a discussion. On MySpace my blogs would turn into forums and get upwards of 300 comments. I don't push for comments as much as I used to and don't engage as much but try to for at least the early part of the day. It creates a conversation, if people know that you are doing it and expecting it they will check back which increases traffic, plus I think it builds a sense of respect and loyalty.

I think responding to comment on your own blog can add to to the "discussion" feeling of people reading later. Acknowledging comments lets future readers and potential commenters know that you're paying attention.
On the other hand, I don't think it's necessarily rude to not comment. Like it has been said, if it's already all been said, there's nothing to add. -
I'm with Kevin on that, for the most part, on my personal blog I do on my others I don't check as often, as it's not necessary.
I don't always make it to the commenters blog right away, if I read them regularly it doesn't matter, if they are new unless the comment is really good I don't always go to their blog either as I don't always have time, but if the come around a few times and the comments are good I eventually make it.
Many commeter's check back to see if I responded, others don't, I rarely go back to see if someone responded to a comment unless it is one of my daily blog reads of which there is only about ten. -
I respond because it lets readers know I'm there and paying attention. I'm not bothered when an author doesn't respond.

i respond sometimes by email, sometimes in the comments, whatever feels appropriate at the moment. i don't fuss too much about it as some readers prefer the emails and some prefer the conversation in the comments ... and some don't want replies at all.
since i can't please all of those requirements all the time, i just do what i want!

I do both. I've found recently that people do seem to come back to see if there's been a response to their comment, so it seems to help in terms of building a community.
I don't think it's rude, though, if that isn't the style you've set forward. And as you're visiting their site and leaving a comment, it's not like you're ignoring them. -
You, SuburbQueen, being rude? My, I've never heard of such a thing! You're one of the nicer ones here, you really are!
About returning commenting: Depends. I like the interaction but am not always good at doing so on my own blogs. -
It depends on the comment, when I leave comments I generally don't go back to see if I had a reply so a reply to me would be pretty pointless.
I nearly always reply to my commentors though as they do tend to pass in and out and it's a nice bit of 'chat' an extension to the post.
I have one article at www.problogs.com which has been read over 6000 times, called 'how to tell if a girl like you' and chaps/boys write to me for advice, so I deffinately do reply.
I also spoke today with one of my regular readers on msn. He said it was first time he'd chatted on msn to fellow blogger. -
I reply to every comment posted on my blog. Isn't that what blogging is about? The interactivity of it? I'm more apt to comment on a blog when I see the owner responds. I always leave a comment on their blog as well and then add them to my reader so I can stay up to date with their posts and return again.

I do both, play everything "by ear." It always surprises me why so many people do not understand some taken-for-granted realities. Example: I recently ran a piece on insurance fraud. This is a scam which is 95% or better shut down, closed out--the perpetrators caught, tried, found guilty, and jailed. Opposed to most other scams, the majority of which are pulled off without consequence, successfully concluded, the scamsters "getting away" with their crimes.
Finding that the "why" of insurance fraudsters getting caught, in contrast to other scamsters getting away with their crimes, needed further explanation, I came back frequently to answer questions in this comments thread. It turned out to be the most interactive comments thread I've had to date, with several people coming back for "seconds." -
I don't think it's rude per se, unless the commenter wanted a response from you (Such as asking a direct question, or obviously trying to stimulate dialog.)
However, I respond more so on my blog comments than on other folks' blogs because I want the dialog on my blog....
I do of course, make an effort to visit my favorites and new blogs alike....but I'm much more likely to respond to those who've responded to me. -
What is better is after a while your commenter's start talking to each other, commenting on the comments so to speak.
-
I think it is best to respond to comments made on your blog on your own blog, because you stay on the same topic; you can also visit the commenter's blog and leave them a comment relating to one of their own posts, I am sure they will appreciate, but if you get like 50 comments a day on your blog, how are you going to find time to visit each blogger and comment on their blogs?
-
If your blog has a "subscribe to comments" option (just like you see at the bottom of this discussion box), then you should go ahead and respond because people want you to. If there is no way for them to get a comment feed, then I don't think it's necessary. Follow?
